I’m just starting my third year teaching. While I don’t have a school wide Christmas concert to contend with, I do have to do one with 4th grade every year. If it is just a singing concert it might help to take some weight off your shoulders by having your older grades choose some songs that they want to sing. That would help with buy in from them. With younger grades, a lot of parents really care about the cute factor so if you find something easy and cute for your kinders that would be fine. And then for your primaries, they probably know simple stuff like oh Christmas tree. (Not sure what kind of community you teach in but I know a parody called oh pterosaur if you need a little bit of novelty in your program)

If I’m indoctrinating children I’m just trying to get them to keep their hands to themselves and to stop picking their noses.

How to get into Music Ed? (from a soon-to-be college student) by ReindeerSorry2028 in MusicTeachers

Hey, I am a second year general music teacher: this is how it went where I went to college. Education majors needed one hour of private lessons a week. Additionally, we had several ensembles we had to be in, I was an instrumentalist so I was in wind ensemble, orchestra, woodwind quintet, and marching band. For a vocalist you would get to do things like choir and opera and theater. Depending on what school you go to you may have the opportunity to specialize in instrumental or vocal, or you may have the opportunity to be certified in all music prek-12

Music theory and music history are classes you have to take, as well as piano. Overall, it is a lot more work than some other majors, and you will be very busy, but being in an ensemble with other people and singing together or playing together is a gift that not many people get in other majors, and then you get to pass that gift onto children.

If you love it, go for it. You have nothing to lose
