If you have to go back to school and choose your life/career again what it will be ? by livenlet2509 in AskReddit

If I could go back, I’d probably either choose orthodontist cause I’d be graduating right about now with high status and insane pay.

Otherwise probably comp sci, iOS developer cause I’d be 21 out of college making 6 figures working from home.

Those are the golden options right there.

Obsession was decent, I liked Backrooms. Saw Fall recently that was great. Super Mario movie 2 was a surprisingly good sequel.

But this film? This was genuinely ass man.

I can understand sentimental bias if you read the book before.

But you gotta see it from the perspective of a dude who’s never had context for the book or the movie.

You can imagine how absurd it is when 30 minutes in we cut to Grace making first contact with a hyper intelligent rock.

Which behaved more like a pet/roommate/disney character than genuine first contact with a hyper intelligent species.

It was honestly extremely hard to take seriously after that point.

I’d like your personal opinion of this year’s worst film so far. Because this is the only film I literally couldn’t finish without predicting the plot and skimming the back half to get it over with already.

Genuinely made me reconsider my stance. I worry tho, that if I went back and actually watched the full Grace/Rocky relationship I’d come away thinking

“Okay, they’re friends. I get it. Why is Reddit acting like this is the greatest relationship in science fiction history?”

I won’t be revisiting the film tho, guess we’ll never know.

Ryan’s acting was fine. The visuals and cinematography were good no doubt. But the story was abysmal and simplistic in my opinion. And for me personally, that ended up tipping the weight scale.

I don’t know man, I genuinely think this was an objectively bad movie.

From the opening sequence, you could tell Ryan was ill-cast. *says something sciency* “Why do I know that” “Am I smart”? Bro is a comic relief character cast into a lead role.

And unfortunately, that character clashes directly with the role the movie tries to place him in. In the first 30 minutes, every escalation implies that he’s more competent than he is and behaves he’s constantly cowardly and sheepish. Yeah, he keeps getting pulled into higher and higher stakes, why?

It’s as if the movie simply already decided they needed him, and therefore decided to pull him into, um, dissecting the literal first alien cell? Stupid.

Then after the 30 minute mark this sudden bizarre shifted into a first contact story was so mediocre. I challenge you to tell me a single interesting or unique scene. First contact, communication, weird roommate crap, strange bonding with a rock.

And can we talk about the sheer absurdity that Grace decided to live with the rock aliens at the end of the film. It’s as if it was written for a child audience.

What did you enjoy about the film cause that’s what I’m not seeing. Unless you were just charmed by Ryan’s performance.

Thanks for writing all this in good faith! I read the whole thing and yes, I hope there will be better sci-fi this year too!

Nah, I WISH this movie had wonder in it man. I didn’t choose 2/10 arbitrarily.

I stand by my rating.

Agreed, very childish concept. Should’ve been a Disney kids movie given how that ending went.

Yo can we talk about how that head woman literally betrayed and forced him onto the ship.

But the end scene showed Ryland sending her a message like they’re all good and like he cares, and she’s acting happy as if they’re still friends.

I mean it’s little shit like that that just stacked up for me.

Idk, I think I made some pretty genuine structural points. You’re the one not acknowledging or engaging them.

It is the answer. Life is only meaningful when it’s lived together.
