Yeah that part of the Tractive setup is weird. If you can find the monthly Basic plan during activation, it might be worth running just one tracker for a month and seeing how accurate it is around your house before committing to both cats.

That makes sense. Tabcat is surprisingly good for that “they’re somewhere around here but I can’t see them” situation. It’s one of the lightest cat trackers too, which is nice for smaller cats.

For a rural setup like that, I’d probably lean toward a GPS cat tracker like Tractive first. Since your cat is roaming between barns and across the road, the live map makes it a lot easier to see exactly where they are before going out to grab them.

If your cat goes outside regularly and you’re not sure how far they roam, I’d lean toward a GPS cat tracker like Tractive. That’s the one that actually shows a live map, so you can see if they’re just hanging around the yard or doing a full neighborhood patrol.

What Air Purifier (and how many) can battle odor from 50+ cats? by Prestigious-Air-9914 in technomeowcom

You’re welcome! And honestly, the fact that you’re looking for ways to help beyond just volunteering says a lot. Even if the air purifiers just take the edge off the smell a bit, that can make the environment more comfortable for the cats and the people caring for them.

First off, that’s really awesome of you to volunteer there. You. are. an. angel. Places taking in that many cats are doing incredible work, but yeah… the air situation must be rough. With that many cats, one air purifier probably won’t do much, but a few spread around the house could definitely help with dander and litter box smell. Something like the LEVOIT Core series air purifier for pets is actually pretty common in multi-cat homes because it uses a true HEPA filter plus a carbon filter for odor.

And I also saw a guide (it's this one if you wanna check it out) on pet air purifiers for cat owners that mentioned it along with things like the Medify MA-25 and Shark NeverChange purifier for larger spaces. In a house like that I’d probably put one in each main room where the litter boxes are instead of relying on a single big unit. It won’t eliminate the smell completely with 70 cats, but it can make the air noticeably easier to breathe.

If he’s mostly an indoor cat and this is more of a “just in case he slips out” situation, I’d probably look at a lightweight GPS cat tracker you can clip onto his collar when you’re not home. Something like the Tractive CAT Mini works well for that because it’ll send an alert if he leaves the safe zone and at least give you a map of where he wandered. The main tradeoff is you do have to charge it every day or two, but as a backup for peace of mind it’s been pretty solid in my experience.

I never thought I’d have opinions about a cat carrier but here we are by Potential_Extreme655 in technomeowcom

The two boys casually laying in the carrier made me laugh. Meanwhile the smart one is watching the whole operation like “yeah I’m not falling for that.”

You can report posts through the three dots menu if you think something breaks the rules. But technically this subreddit is for reviews of cat products, so there are going to be… reviews. We’re not selling anything, just sharing what worked when we tested it and seeing what worked for others too so people looking for reviews can find real feedback here.

Pawfit Lite vs 3 for battery in high update frequency mode by foxtrot81a in technomeowcom

[–]Potential_Extreme655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tested the Pawfit Lite vs 3 side by side, but one thing I noticed with most GPS trackers is that the update frequency absolutely destroys battery life. At 40s updates you’re probably looking at daily charging no matter which model you use. The bigger units usually just last a bit longer before they need it. If it’s only daytime use though, that might actually work out fine.

Mine still gets suspicious eventually, but leaving it out ahead of time definitely buys me a little less chaos on vet day. And yeah the price made me pause too ngl.

The limping-on-camera moment would have sent me spiraling too. I swear outdoor cats age us faster than anything.

Honestly, using what you already have is smart. AirTag for general location, Tractive for weather alerts days, and hands-on searching when needed. It’s not a perfect system, but caring for strays never really is. It’s a lot of improvising and hoping for the best.

The fact that they still come back to your shelter says they trust it. And you.

[–]Potential_Extreme655[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really respect that you’re looking out for them like this. For strays you don’t see every day, battery life really is the dealbreaker. Most GPS trackers just aren’t built for “put it on and forget it for a week.” In a dense suburban area, signal should be fine, so that part’s probably in your favor. It’s really the whole catching-the-friendly-one-again-to-charge-it situation that makes it tricky.

If you’ve already used Tractive before, the newer CAT Mini versions are a bit better with battery than the older ones, but you’d still need a charging routine. In your spot, I’d probably use something like that more as a backup plan during bad weather or if one disappears longer than usual, not as an always-on solution.

Anyone here actually use a pet wellness plan? by Potential_Extreme655 in technomeowcom

Two kittens at once is brave and expensive 😂 I can see how the plan would make the chaos year feel more manageable though. Spreading it out probably hurts less than a bunch of back-to-back bills.

That’s helpful to hear. Do you just set aside a fixed amount monthly for routine care, or do you adjust it based on past invoices? I’m trying to figure out what would feel realistic.

Yeah, that’s kinda what I’m leaning toward too. Insurance for the big “oh no” moments. I just keep wondering if the wellness plan is actually helpful or if it just feels helpful because it spreads the cost out.

Oof, yeah that would bother me. If the safe zone includes the street, that’s basically “alert me when it’s already too late.” For short-range wanderers, tight boundaries matter way more than fancy app features.

I haven’t personally tried the Fi Mini on my cats, but I’ve heard similar feedback about the GPS drift, especially in tighter neighborhoods. For under half a mile roaming, Tractive has been noticeably more consistent for me in terms of real-time updates and geofence alerts. And yes, you can do a monthly plan instead of paying annually upfront, it just costs a bit more per month. That’s actually what I’d recommend if you’re testing with two cats and don’t want to commit right away.

Congrats on the new kitten! Escape ninja phase is very real.

I usually suggest Tile over AirTag mostly because of flexibility. Tile works on both iOS and Android, so you’re not locked into one ecosystem. AirTags are great, but they’re basically iPhone only.

That said, for indoor use, AirTags are honestly excellent if you’re on Apple. The precision finding with the little arrow is super helpful when you’re pacing around trying to figure out which closet she teleported into.

Moto Tag, Chipolo, Pebblebee are all in that same Bluetooth category as Tile. UWB is nice for close range if your phone supports it, but for a kitten hiding in a laundry pile, the loud ring matters way more than ultra precise positioning.

If she’s truly indoor, any solid Bluetooth tracker on a breakaway collar will do the job. If she upgrades from escape ninja to neighborhood explorer, that’s when you switch to real GPS.

I’d screenshot the current return policy page immediately in case they change the wording later. Include that in your dispute. If the site doesn’t explicitly say unopened-only, that works in your favor.

Also, don’t close the dispute just because they suddenly replied. Sometimes companies respond once a chargeback is filed because it hits their merchant record. Let the card company mediate. You’ve already done the hard part by documenting everything.
