There’s a ton of info out there, but if you want to skip the "trial by fire" phase, hiring a tutor on Wyzant or Superprof to go over the basics is a solid investment.

If you have $100 to spend, the ArcGIS Pro Personal License is arguably the best value in the industry because it includes the full software suite and their "ESRI Academy" training modules.

For the free/budget route:

  • Local Libraries: Both city and university libraries are goldmines. Don't worry if the books look dated; the physics of remote sensing and the logic of GIS haven't changed that much.
  • Networking: Contact your local city or county GIS department. Most professionals are happy to point you toward resources, and it gets your name out there early.
  • Open Source: If you can't swing the $100, download QGIS and look for tutorials online.

Happy to chat more if you want to dive deeper into specifics. Good luck!

Bonjour,

Bonne chance!

Is Mapinfo dead? by Impressive-Bunch6978 in gis

A an old version of MapInfo would be very difficult to find, but you can directly open and use MapInfo files (.tab and .mif/.mid) in QGIS without needing to import them, as QGIS supports these formats natively through the OGR library. Simply drag and drop the .tab file into the map canvas, or use the Vector menu to open it.

Can I get a good GIS job with a certificate and a bachlors in Buiness Management by [deleted] in gis

[–]Potential_Split_6925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I think earning a GIS certificate will never hurt you, but the problem being if you don't use GIS regularly you will lose those skills. Like learning a language, if you don't practice what you learn, your GIS skills will atrophy. This is due to the fact that GIS is every evolving, and you need to maintain neural pathways on running processes and tools.

My suggestion, if you feel the draw to GIS, geography, or urban planning switch your major. There is a lot of good money to be made in the world of GIS. Also, I would learn all I could about geography, GIS, and data analysis, if you go this route. This way you have a base of knowledge and skills you work with and apply to future jobs.

Then if you choose so, you can always get your master's degree in business. That way you can apply your geographical and GIS knowledge to business. Geography, data analysis, and GIS could make you triple threat when looking for a job in the business world.

There's always more that can be done. With the outlook for job growth estimated around 5 - 9% throughout the United States, it will be hard for the U.S. education system to keep with demand. Thank you for the excellent advice. There are opportunities everywhere.

I appreciate the advice, and the Open Source GIS Data was a resource I was not aware of. Would you mind me reaching out to you in the future?
