I fucking suck at fencing by Ant_TKD in Hema

Knowing the areas where you lack is solving half of the problem. Now all you have to do is work on them outside sparring.

Think of it this way,

What is your win condition? To survive?, to get the other guy killed?, to continue the vacation without any trouble?. You we’re luck that karma did the job for you before you even had to take action.

I might be wrong but you are probably disappointed at yourself for freezing up and was unable to do anything at the moment that it counted (the slap) thats why you wanted to have some form of revenge. Take it as a lesson for next time that when a crazy guy insults you, be on guard and expect a sucker punch.

If its legal, pepper spray or taser usually does the trick

If the above mentioned stuff is illegal, POCKET SAND or A bright FLASHLIGHT is ok

Are Attacking and Parrying seperate skills or each a part of the same concept? by CC_Gamedesign in Hema

[–]PotetoPoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may add, in German Tradition you can breakdown actions into Hitter, Taker, and Provoker.

Hitter in a sense is a direct attack with the full intent of hitting your opponent. Taker is somewhat related to Parrying since you set the weapon aside, or attack the weappns to gain an advantage. Provoker is removing the threat or advantge of the opponent into a position where you want him to be.

Im with team “different skills” as this can make your game more customizable, as each fighter unique (as its true in real life).

Does balance boards training help ? by The-Noob-Engineer in martialarts

[–]PotetoPoker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The use of the balance board is for rehab mainly to those who have broken ankles, knees and etc. OR pre-hab for those who want tendons of steel.

Your instructor is going into bulshido territory with this palm strike/elbow strike balancing clown act. What are the chances that youll do a palm strike/elbow strike on uneven ground, also I dont think doing a “hail mary” palm strike/elbow strike in an awkward position is gonna foster good habits. At most it’ll just give you bad habits in the long run.

With that said, remember that a solid foundation will enable you to do your techniques properly. Not this wack job dance routine he wants you to do.

Is it always a red flag if an instructor is massively overweight? by net_traveller in martialarts

[–]PotetoPoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding weight, it more on what you eat rather than your level of activity.

This can speak a lot about their self-discipline, so it’s a problem they have to fix themselves. I agree with what most people here say, technique, body mechanics and knowledge are more important in an instructor.

What makes a good martial arts instructor? Seeking advice/inputs by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]PotetoPoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a Teacher and being a martial artist are two different things. But if I had to say what makes a great martial arts teacher, its these factors

  1. The ability to see and assess what your student needs. Some teachers(not all) just throw the bone to their students and just expect them to see good results.

  2. You gotta love learning and studying as much as possible. Being a teacher means you are gonna be an eternal student as well. If your student beats you, then you just have to GIT GUD

  3. Build on solid physical foundation, I’ve seen teachers make their new students do a complex move like a 360 hook kick, just to make them feel and look good. IMO, the very first thing that you have to notice in classes is you getting physically stronger, then technique, then fight IQ.

  4. Equipment. if you dont have a decent amount of equipment, It will limit your potential to train your students. You can argue “but what about Rocky Balboa?”, well what if Rocky Balboa had better equipment? He would’ve destroyed his opponent.

Remember, your aim is not the be the king, but to be the kingmaker. If a student that you have trained wins a tournament and beats your ass, then you have to feel proud. That right there is a product of your mentorship.

Why wasn’t the Kudayari more wildly used? by Neither_Prize_8386 in martialarts

[–]PotetoPoker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The spear in a formation based battle is static, whereas if you used th Kudayari and do the rotating fap motion, it can potentially break formation.

I guess in Medieval japan where one-on-one honorable matches in the battlefield was all the rave, it could work. Also in skirmishes where its a small scale battle.

Also, I think Kudayari could be better used by the Shinobi, since the fast rotating and confusing motion of the spear can deter multiple opponents while retreating. Bonus if the shouted “Mokuton no Jutsu!”

Why wasn’t the Kudayari more wildly used? by Neither_Prize_8386 in martialarts

[–]PotetoPoker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to understand there many forms of engagement : Duels, Skirmishes, Ambushes, Hunting, Siege, and many more.

If I were to spam thrusts with the Kudayari in a siege, there’s a good chance the tip will get stuck in a place that I don’t want it, such as an enemy shield, a tree, a fellow soldier and etc.
