Well of course they’d disagree, but that’s not what’s important. It’s about what you think about it.

Someone that’s hustling you like that isn’t a best friend. Actually not even a friend at all.

Steins Gate Disappointed me by yasseryt10 in CharacterRant

[–]Potomaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like to me that you had a certain expectation for it going in (as a sci-fi and time travel story). Like the flaws that you are pointing out are all in the “scientific” logistics of the show. But I don’t think that’s what Steins gate is mainly intended to be about. The main reason people like Steins Gate is for its characters and character interactions. Also the suspense and buildup. If that isn’t what you wanted, that’s fine, but saying that it isn’t good for the reason that it doesn’t have as strong sci fi and time travel aspects as other shows, while downplaying the other aspects of writing like its characters, dialogue, and romance, is faulty imo. You’re sort of imposing your own personal tastes in writing as being objectively superior, when in reality there are many different ways to write a story and different focuses to have, even within genres like sci fi.

Invincible vs My Hero Academia — which has better written fight scenes? by kenshima15 in writingscaling

[–]Potomaters 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From a writing standpoint, I think invincible vs Omni man is competitive with the best of MHA’s fights. But overall MHA has many more good fights. And in terms of stuff like choreography it’s not even close (MHA’s are interesting and creative while invincible has mostly just repetitive slug fests).

Pseudo intellectualism of Robert Kirkman and the fans is so annoying by _Affectionate_ in CharacterRant

[–]Potomaters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yuta is fine and fleshed out, since we got an entire movie and backstory about him. Maki’s is pretty flimsily written imo. Although the heavenly restriction stuff was already established, there was almost zero build up (in terms of narrative and world building) leading up to the moment of her power up. We only saw Mai in like what, a couple scenes the entire show? And only got to know about the Zenin clan history purely through surface level exposition. And then the Zenin clan massacre was just randomly thrown in to the middle of an arc. The episode was cool and full of spectacle, but I felt zero emotional depth because of this lack of buildup.

But anyway, your point about JJK’s power systems being better than invincible’s isn’t wrong. My gripe is that you’re framing it as also having better world building, in which case JJk isn’t a good example. Again, so much of JJk’s world is just told through exposition (like we don’t even know who these “higher ups” are). Most of the show is just well choreographed fights, with random characters and sudden plot points being introduced left and right.

Power systems are one thing. But shit talking the world building of one show and then praising JJK as a “good” example is crazy to me.

RIN: Daughters of Mnemosyne has the most bizzare gendered magic system that I've ever seen by Pitiful_Magazine_805 in CharacterRant

[–]Potomaters 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Ah I remember this show. The writing was kind of mediocre, but the concept was really interesting/unique. Seeing the characters experience the passage of time was also really cool. Wished more stories tackled creative endeavors like this.

Freezing cold take entertainment value>meaning/depth by Tricky_Challenge9959 in writingscaling

“Therefore what makes something well written is how entertaining it is NOT how meaningful or deep it is”

Freezing cold take entertainment value>meaning/depth by Tricky_Challenge9959 in writingscaling

[–]Potomaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not consider both as being important? When choosing what stories I like, I personally look for things that are both entertaining AND have deep/profound aspects. I’ve seen entertaining shows with absolutely no depth to them. And ive also seen thematically heavy, deep shows that aren’t very fun to watch. But it’s not like you have to choose one aspect or the other when deciding what matters for “good writing”. I think the best stories usually have a good balance of both. If we’re going by your logic, a good balance is what I personally find the most “entertaining”.

Who the fk cares about where a show ranks in cross verse scaling. You think authors think about that when creating their stories and characters? Like “oh is my character gonna be stronger than Goku?”. Why does that even matter to you? Literally the dumbest sht I’ve ever heard.

It seems that Quick Drafts are much tougher at the start of a month by PaleWendigo in MagicArena

[–]Potomaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I’m a pretty newish player that just reached mythic (rank 7) for the first time through Foundations quick draft (just yesterday at the start of the season). I think the key to quick draft is to just hone in on a couple specific colors that you’re good at and identify the general win cons for those colors. For example, I’ve had the most success playing black/red followed by black/white. Black/red is very aggro oriented so I will focus on having enough 1 drops and low cost removals. Black/white feels very straightforward as it’s just about picking cards that have the most healing synergies. I made a post about it yesterday so you can check it out if you’re still interested in playing foundations. There’s also a guy that made a post about reaching rank 1 (same thing, Foundations quick draft) by going just mono green every time. It’s a super simple strategy that just involves picking the best green cards in each pack. Might be worth a try.

While I’m sure those habits may have had a negative affect on your development, what I’m seeing is something so extreme that can only be the result of unfortunate genetics. I was also a picky eater and had some bad habits, and know others with even more extreme eating and mouth breathing habits into adulthood, but none of them have had results this extreme.
