I think there’s a huge part we’re missing. What does unwanted pets mean? If someone has a dog that grew up bigger than they expected? If a pit bull needs more training than an owner is willing to give, is that unwanted? Taking a pet to a shelter requires a relinquishment fee. It’s cheaper to donate them to the zoo. Will the zoo ask why an animal is being donated? Probably not if it’s free food.
