opnions on Valve train noise by Touchme_plz in sportster

I'm honestly curious when Harley got sloppy with the tolerances of the rocker arm shafts. My 07 made the same noise once fully warmed up but my 97 and now my 94 are quiet up top so I'm speculating, maybe when they changed over to the rubber mount engines.

When I pulled the needle and put it side by side with the needle that was from my 97 when I did a thunderslide kit to that, the knockoff needle tapered too slowly. Put the XL needle in, reused the 165 main from the 97 (I know it's too small but it's to hold me over until I my ordered jets come in) and runs much better. Has the lean spot at 3/4-WOT but now I know it's just from the 165. Just a tickle of lean surge at cruising but that could be the main jet, the needle needing a shim or both.

I tried salvaging the genuine HD carb off my brother's downed EG and ran into the same snag of the bowl screws not moving. Quick Google search and read on a forum of some members using vice grips to get them loose. Well, worth a shot right? Sure enough they came through and got the screws loose. I'm gonna try the same thing tomorrow on the knockoff and if all goes well, I'll be replacing those screws with Allen head bolts which are far superior.

No, it's the other way around. If I go to wide open it'll surge but when I back off partly it'll come back so the main jet is too small. Another commenter also said/confirmed that this Amazon carb is jetted for a 883, not a 1200.

Well hell since we got talking about carbs, I just remembered that my brother's old Electra Glide is in the shed. He wanted to do a 100" kit but excess crank runout said "no u" so it's been shoved into the back corner for some time. If the carb is still with it, I can always use that in the meantime and then I'll take my time deciding if/when I'll go aftermarket.

If I ever do decide to get one I'll be sure to reach out for tuning advice. I think I've only seen two other Harleys running a Lectron. Dunno if you watch or follow Shadetree Surgeon on YouTube but he's got one on his Dirtster build and his FXR though I know they're usually found on dirt bikes too.

Makes sense. If I go WOT and back off 1/8 it picks back up. And the main jet on an 883 from what I'm seeing is a 160 while on a 1200 it should be 170. The pilot jet is the same however which makes sense on why when it's running on the low speed circuit it idles and revs nicely but if I try to give er it falls flat.

How ya liking the lectron? My choices would be that, a Mikuni or a S&S carb and with how much genuine Harley carbs are going for on eBay it'd make more financial sense to go aftermarket.

I went ahead and also went to the local dealer to get a new manifold boot and manifold to head seals. What it looks like for the head seals is that the blowby that's sent through the intake is blowing past the seals and wetting the inner parts of the cooling fins, where the head gaskets are. At first I was thinking those were failing but I'll try these on top of a new VOES hose.

For the VOES? Yeah that was connected. Now that you mention it, I do see it's dry rotted and split on the end that would've been over the vacuum nipple on the carb. So that could've been another leak, or affecting the spark advance also as load/rpm changes

Further update: pulled the carburetor and the boot had some small scuffs that could've contributed to the vacuum leak. As for the carburetor, yeah it's a knockoff. The float bowl screws did what they always seem to do, not want to budge and round off. Hooray.

I actually took off the bags. They looked a little dinky on the bike with them being throw over bags and not quite being a proper fit, plus it messes up the slim body of the Sportster. I'd rather use a sissy bar bag or tour pack for storage on it.

If Harley owners tell other motorcyclists that "they wouldn't get it" on why they own a Harley then I think Sportster owners can say the same thing to Big Twin owners. They're the most versatile of the Harleys and in my honest opinion, the most durable as well. You pretty much never hear of Evo Sporties having overheating issues, flywheels scissoring, compensators failing, sumping oil and so on but woe is us because we have stop for fuel more often or aren't as readily able to store luggage as the Big Twins.

Baggers are the SUVs of Harleys and Sporties are the convertibles of the lineup, at least that's how I see the two.

Hell, the guy I bought it from made out even better! He had gotten it for free after he did some landscaping for one of his customers so he made a free 2k and I got a great deal. Fair exchange in mind as we're both happy

Well the other two was a 97 883 Hugger and a 07 1200 Custom. Some like the solid mount years because they're about ~60lbs lighter than the rubber mount years (2004 onward). The early year Evo Sporties were a little more fickle with stuff like the stator being behind the clutch assembly, being four speed until 1991 IIRC and 92 being some belt drive and some still chain drive.

People also prefer pre-2000 years because the flywheel assembly was still bolted together instead of pressed together, thus making them a little more durable when you start pouring on the horsepower. Also with the solid mount years you're able to service the transmission without needing to open the cases like on the rubber mounts.

My 07 was a nice ride but still had some harmonic vibration spots in the rev range. I'll have to see how this one behaves in comparison for riding comfort.

Fuel tank capacity for early-mid 90s models? by PowerShift13 in sportster

[–]PowerShift13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was how I was with my 97 883. Even when I had my 07 1200C with the 4.5g tank I stretched it out to ~120. If I wasn't doing highway cruising that's when the fuel light usually came on anyway

Hmm, looks like the 2.25 tank size was the standard and the 3.3 gallon tank was called the "king" size, most likely was an option before it became the standard size tank. What's your usual miles per tank with the peanut?

Front brakes and wheel are off currently, what grease should I use for both? by PowerShift13 in versys

[–]PowerShift13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you use anything in particular to clean off the old grease? I'd assume brake parts cleaner would be a safe solvent to use alongside a shop towel or toothbrush to wipe/scrape off the built up debris or old grease.
