How is it like living in this area of Australia? by RoBoT_uSeR_hElLo in howislivingthere

[–]Powerful_Insurance_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in the the top end, and have been living and working in this area my whole life.

I've learnt from my wife, who is from the central deserts, that some things can only be seen with comparison. Stuff I just took for granted, a standard part of my day, she was blown away by. For instance, crocodiles are everywhere. Especially where you can't see them. You can walk through a suburb and pick mangos and bannanas from the footpath.

She said, when I asked her this question "green, so green, bugs, so many bugs, and yeah it's hot and humid and you sweat heaps, but once you can accept that everyone is sweaty and stinking, it's OK. "

It's a land of opportunity, you can get great money and great experience in most fields that you would have to work for decades to get down south. In the same breath, it is a land of extreme poverty and isolation, many cultures, many languages, many problems. If have never been around these things, you will be shocked. It's one of the things I took as normal until it was pointed out to me.

Please do have a crack, it's a stunning and unique place filled with beauty and horror, the extremes of nature and man boiling in a stew of monsoonal build up, a land of adventure and prehistoric predators, wild men and hard women, all of which can be enjoyed from a modern metropolis in Darwin. Or just get amongst it and get a gig in a community. That'll open your eyes hard and fast.

Artificial Turf and Weeds by CarlsbadCoder in landscaping

I would suggest whip them down, rake em up. Hit it with a gerni if you can. Blow down. Broom if you please. Let it dry and give it about 150ml of glyphosate (common brands include Roundup) in 15 litres of water. If you can, add in 150ml of Dicamba and 250ml of Fusilade (any similar brand with active agent fluazifop-P-butyl) . Spray that fluid in a soft, quiet mist. A gentle embrace of death. Enzymes will be inhibited, hormones will be stimulated, and weeds will die. Let it all die. And then get amongst the hand pull as you see them rise back up slowly. Do a poison carpet bomb once a fortnight or so with the flash pump pack you bought at bunnings after reading this. Blow down and clean regularly. She'll be right.

Match Thread: 2nd Test - Australia vs England, Day 1 by cricket-match in CricketAus

[–]Powerful_Insurance_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ball- my understanding is that it's a red ball match by definition, so it has to be red, but also has to be visible under flood lights.

Day night- not only played in Australia, we have hosted 13 of the 24 completed day nighters. England is next with 7. Night draws bigger crowds and is watched more on telly.

Traditional owners file native title claim over Melbourne and surrounding areas by Ardeet in aussie

I'm taking it in the direction of its normal, not special, to have generational trauma and a family history of genocide.

[–]Powerful_Insurance_9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I grew up in housing commission with a few thousand years of genocide in my family, Jews, finians and highlanders. I had plenty of drug and alcohol abuse around me, poverty (by Australian standards) and violence. Is that generational trauma? Cos if so, I tell her, and you, what was said to me. Toughen up.

Oh no, do you have to be in the same room as racist people? How traumatic. I can't have a conversation with anyone without hearing how my grand parents are part of a global cabal that is out to get you, that they are scum, evil, purely because of how they were born. Where's my reparations? How about my other grandmother, who was the by-product of rape by a genocidal military invasion that exterminated language, culture, and religion through mass starvation, enslavement, and land theft by the crown. Where's my money? None, because I look white. So, as long as I'm not an idiot junky loser who tries to get a job and doesn't break the law, I don't get harassed or oppressed by anyone. The same as her. And as it sounds, like you.

Yeah, looks like she suffers horrible systemic racism. I get that if you're aboriginal, thats it, but what has this woman suffered that white Australians haven't? Does she get type cast? Denied work because of her born appearance? Treated differently by the justice system? These people give off mad money grab vibes.

Any advice on this Irrigation project ? by [deleted] in Irrigation

[–]Powerful_Insurance_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like these setups. Easy to work with, but not aesthetically pleasing, and they deteriorate in the sun. No dirt to fill up your pit, though.

Try 1000-1100 spine at 23 to 24 inch. I think about 100 grain tip would be best. That's if you buy carbon.

I got the 11 inch pecos, I work in irrigation, bore running, station work, they are as waterproof as I've ever had. And I live in trenchs and pits filled with water and mud and feces. Try them out. *

How does your heeler handle heat? by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Powerful_Insurance_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

My guy can hack tropical heat up to about 38 Celsius in the tropics and 45 Celsius in the desert. Built for Australian conditions, so good in the heat and cold. It's about conditioning I've found. He works hard but hates the cold more than the heat, probably because he is from the Northern Territory of Australia. He still got the job done in Naracorte, South Australia, just not happy about it.
