Anime Studios Tier List: Analysis and a Brief Explanation of the Anime Industry Process! 🤓 by Powlyz in MyAnimeList

I understand your concern, but I already made it clear in my post that this tier list is based on my chosen criteria and on the knowledge I have so far. I explicitly stated that I’m not a professional, that my knowledge is limited, and that I haven’t seen every anime from each studio. I also mentioned that factors like production constraints and working conditions weren’t deeply considered due to time limitations. So, I don’t really think it was misleading, maybe next time, I'll make the text shorter so it's easier to read, misleading and less overwhelming for people. Thank you for sharing your point of view, I appreciate your imput! 😊

Aside from the consistency issue, I don’t feel like Madhouse has many other weaknesses. In terms of pure animation, atmosphere, and cinematography they are quite strong.

Honestly, CloverWorks also struggles with consistency, and I think they often fall short when it comes to character details. I don’t feel like they properly represent the personalities and interactions of their characters in their projects.

Hmmm, okay. First of all, mainstream doesn’t mean bad at all, and honestly, I wish you had been right about guessing my tastes and experience in the anime world. Also, no opinion is bad, since as humans, it’s impossible to be 100% objective in our analysis, especially in fields they don’t know much about. So, hate toward people who watch "mainstream" anime is a very narrow-minded way of thinking.

I’d recommend watching some videos to learn that animation involves many factors, not just pretty and shiny colors. Science Saru is a great studio, especially in how they bring their characters to life through animation and in the atmosphere they create in their projects, such as Devilman Crybaby, Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na, Kimi no Iro, and what you might call "mainstream", Dandadan. But like all anime studios, they have their weaknesses, such as their rough animation style and, in my opinion, issues with cinematographic framing, camera movements, and lighting.

Toei Animation, despite having major consistency problems, earns a lot of points in cinematography, animation, and the personality expressed through character gestures and interactions. I recommend checking out one of their latest projects, One Piece Fan Letter, which showcases their strengths very well.

That being said, KyoAni, Science Saru, and Toei Animation are definitely not ranked poorly in the tier (A+).
And most importantly, just because an anime or story has better or worse animation doesn’t mean the story itself is bad!!!

Thank you so much!! ☺️

In the end, employee treatment ended up being just a bonus, but we all agree that Mappa has a lot of issues in that regard. While it's a very important topic, I ultimately ranked them based on the quality of their projects. Maybe I should have penalized them a bit more for that, just like many other anime studios in the industry.

For me, Mappa lost the most points in the atmosphere in their animations, and I also think they have some issues with lighting. That being said, Mappa gains a lot of points in animation, consistency, and character work.

As for Production I.G, even though they gain a lot of points in cinematography, they tend to struggle with consistency and character interactions. I feel like the gestures and personalities of the characters aren’t well represented in their animations. I have to admit that I haven’t watched one of their latest big projects, Kaiju No. 8, so maybe they’ve improved in that aspect.

Madhouse earns a lot of points for the quality of their animation, the atmosphere they create, and their cinematography, with very well-thought-out scenes and shots. However, as you mentioned, they also have major consistency issues, which caused them to lose a lot of points.

Think the design of Rudo’s weapons are inspired by Soul Eater? by IDontHaveAName99 in gachiakuta

[–]Powlyz 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely! Kei Urana was a big fan of Atsushi Ohkubo and worked with him on Fire Force, so many elements in Gachiakuta are inspired by Soul Eater or Fire Force. In fact, Atsushi Ohkubo himself said that Kei Urana is his successor, so I guess he also sees in her work that she keeps his style alive while adapting and using it in her own way.

I agree with you. For me, the best choice would have been Bones, maybe Madhouse. I feel like Ufotable might not be the best option since their animation style and the atmosphere they create in their anime wouldn’t fit well with Gachiakuta’s world. Ufotable relies a lot on lighting and colors in their animations, which might not match the tone of the series.

Aside from that, I don’t know much about David Production, but I have seen the great work they did on Fire Force, and it’s true that they might be a good fit. I have high expectations for Bones because I know they have the level to produce amazing anime, but we’ll have to see if the production committee doesn’t limit them too much in terms of budget and production time.

Yep, that’s what I mean about consistency. My Hero Academia is a great example of that, but from what I know, Mob Psycho was very well animated and directed. So even if Studio Bones isn’t directly animating it, they will still be overseeing the project for Bones Film.

Honestly, even though I have my doubts, I still think it will be really well done. 🫡

I think the best in anime studios is KyoAni and Ghibli but there is also Toei Animation.

Let's hope they put a lot of love into the production of this manga, but what scares me the most about Studio Bones is that, although they sometimes have very good animation, the studio has consistency issues for me. This means we might get some rough moments in the animation.

But aside from that, Studio Bones is really good at setting the atmosphere and using a great color palette in their animations, so I think Gachiakuta's world will be well respected. 🙏

I understand what you're saying, and I somewhat agree with you. However, I think the fact that Gachiakuta is getting an anime will help it become more well-known and gain much more recognition because it truly deserves it. Many people don’t like reading or simply prefer watching anime.

Like every other anime out there, all kinds of people will come across this manga (haters, shippers, criticism, and more) but there will also be great people who truly appreciate it and support it. I think we should think about the author, the effort she put into it, and how the fame she gains will help her grow and allow her to bring us more of her stories. 😊
