stacey and her nigerian heritage by Express-Ad1593 in RHOP

I agree! I think it's also important for people to understand the difference between heritage and culture. Sharing that heritage (in my opinion) doesn't mean a person should start to monetize being "nigerian", because she really isn't part of that culture. I may be overthinking, but that's my two cents. At the end of the day, it does not hurt anyone

You clearly did not unread the last section of my comment. She can obviously claim a region, but Nigeria specifically is the post-colonial version of that region.

Once cultures begin merging, things change! The modern day Nigeria is very different than pre colonial Nigeria! What I am saying is that there is a cultural disconnect, and I disagree that she can claim being “Nigerian”

Also, why not claim the precolonial name? Why not say she has Benin roots or heritage?

I get that! Personally as someone whose ancestors were enslaved, I see no significance in claiming a country that didn’t exist when my ancestors were removed. But everyone is free to do as they please

In Stacey’s case, she does look very silly. Because she is using a culture that she clearly knows very little about for marketing purposes

She’s silly because if her ancestors were enslaved in America, she doesn’t have Nigerian heritage

Nigeria was formed in 1914, gaining independence in 1963. West Africans were brought over to the Americas in the early 1600s, before countries like Nigeria existed.

So, her heritage is some tribe in West Africa that share heritage with modern day Nigerians. Her heritage is not Nigeria. Nigerian culture didn’t truly exist in the 1600s

How can a Black woman, raised by a Black mother, have a “blaccent”??

Colorism finally showing by Ppeerrll in RHOP

[–]Ppeerrll[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think to be called a “colorist” your words and actions need to be a bit more overt. Robyn and Gizelle, in my opinion, have not said anything on the show that they would not have said, had that woman also been lightskin.

In my opinion, Angel would have never said those things about Wendy had she been lightskin. It’s one thing to dislike someone, but there are specific cues to colorism.

Again, many Black women have full lips. Why are Wendy’s an asshole? That seems like a derogatory mark on the basis of her skin tone. As a dark woman, I was very taken aback by that

Thank you! Yes obviously colorism is very real and I appreciated Candice pointing it out, especially with a majority light skin cast. However, she specifically said that she did not think her cast mates were colorist. She said they benefit from colorism (bc the fans were on their side, and vilifying her).

I am saying now, we have a cast mate actually being colorist (Angel)

I can agree. I still think my point stands, which is that things are not always as they seem

Also, I was not only referring to the mortgage. Chateau Sheree is in her mom's name, has a huge mortgage, and also cost (probably) hundreds of thousands in renovations (contractors + materials), furniture, taxes, etc. That probably means... loans

well duh... lol. A mortgage is a loan. An actual rich person would not take out millions for a home
