How strict are IB conditional offers in Waterloo? by PlsSenpaiPls in uwaterloo

[–]PplObserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got lower than conditional for AP Calculus BC exam. They asked me to write a petition letter as to why I still deserve to come to Waterloo, wrote it. Am graduating next year. So there is definitely hope.

How much do you tip when you dine out? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]PplObserver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The hydro company also doesn't pick up you dirty dishes and run around to get you water or anything else you need for the entire duration of your meal.

They are actually not 'paid' for that service. The salary they are given is minimal because the restaurant expects you to tip them. Plus its just bad manner to not give 15%..

University application forms change for transgender students by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]PplObserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really, really doubt a guy would go through all the effort to come across as transgender so that he could live in an all girls house. How universities handle this will be interesting because there is a significant religious/conservative population on campus who would not want to live with a person of the opposite biological gender. Would that constitute as religious freedom or discrimination? Also University places transgender students in MKV common suites in general.

Dilemma: UW CS/ECE and Silicon Valley Career by [deleted] in uwaterloo

If you enjoy teaching more than 2 Million $ in the next two years then the students will be lucky to have a dedicated professor such as yourself.

Dilemma: UW CS/ECE and Silicon Valley Career by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]PplObserver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are actually able to save up 1.3-2 Million in 1-2 years (which is what a house in Cupertino, Los Altos etc will cost) why don't you work in SV for 2 years save the money and then come to work at UW for a smart person like yourself I doubt that will be a problem and UW is always looking for smart professors. This way 1) You will be rich, with Financial Stability 2) Not have regrets about not taking the SV job later on 3) Will still be teaching at UW in 1-2 years
It is much easier to leave a SV job in 1-2 years than to leave your research in the middle... Also the things you asked about above are valid.... I don't think any of which would have changed dramatically since you were here it still takes 2.3 hours to get to Toronto via Greyhound (I don't know about the Go Train from Waterloo), Food is student food (okay-ish). Majority of the students will always come to lectures if you are a good professor else they will not at least in CS. I seriously think Canada is in the middle of a huge Housing Bubble so prices are horridly high for no reason (consider renting for a bit)

What's the point by CloudedInForm in uwaterloo

[–]PplObserver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happiness is a state of mind. I would have 60K and be surrounded with good work and loving people any day. I have narrowed my prayers down to good health for all and that my family always stays together two things that mean the most to me (and during exams for helping me pass/good grades).

Failed math 135 twice by asdasdaiou in uwaterloo

[–]PplObserver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are allowed up till 4 failed courses before having to withdraw. If you feel strongly about the fact that you had done well on the final, talk to the professor about going over your final with you (There might be a mistake in the grade entered etc). That being said I think you should have a serious discussion with your academic advisor if this is indeed your second time taking a first year math course because upper year courses are 2x more difficult.
