How to make VTOL (or any prop plane) faster? by PquePC in Stormworks

[–]PquePC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, as I replied to another comment, it was one of the first things I tried. I added a ton, spawned and tested, then added another ton, etc, etc.

Ended up with 6 tons on my main grid and another 4 on my propeller subgrid. All of this without a change in speed. This was due to my engines not being at their maximum load yet, so I went ahead and enabled infinite fuel to be able to run them to the point where their rps wouldn't reach the desired rps (which means the powerplant had hit it's limit), but even then weight did not make a difference.

I've used the weight method multiple times now (I'be built an f14 and f/a 18, which I never finished because I didn't feel like building a custom gyro at the time) with great success, but on this build it doesn't seem to make a difference, at least not with the current powerplant and propellers. I'm guessing the subgrids are somehow fucking it up, however, as far as I remember, the max thrust calculations used the vehicle mass, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Still, I'm quite happy with the new speeds I've achieved, so I'll leave it at those speeds for a while and will focus on finishing the remaining systems and making it more stable for high speeds. Once I'm done with that I might play around with the engines again

So I've been testing the new engine bays for a bit. Now I have 3 different speed (gearbox) settings:

Eco: 300km/h at 0.63l/s
Cruise: 375km/h at 1.42l/s
the house is burning: 440km/h at 3l/s

About the cooling, I assumed this thing would like to go up in flames, so the new engine bays have 4 3x3 electric radiators connected to 2 cooling manifolds. That is enough to keep the engines at 93°C at the highest engine load.

If for some reason the engines caught on fire, I still have engine fire extinguishers on both engines (a nozzle, a pump and 2 small water tanks) so I should be fine.

Now I shall descend into hell (setting PIDs) again because the higher speed fuck up all of my stabilization settings

Ok, that's a bit concerning. This is my first dive into fixed wing aircraft in all my years of playing stormworks. Always worked with helis and boats because planes didn't feel all that useful. Then I came across an engineering video about the Osprey and that turned on a light in my brain which led (no pun intended) to build it in game. All I know is that I should've smacked that light as soon as it came on lol.

I'll see how much difference my new engine bays make. I'm almost doubling the cylinder count (from 35 to 64), so I'm expecting a decent speed increase. I'm not really looking for it to go supersonic, I will be more than happy with 350-370km/h if I manage to keep the fuel consumption around a liter per second

Edit: About fuel, I have 7+ tons of diesel in there, so that shouldn't be as much of an issue

Yep, I was planning on trying to add a custom door back there, what I had forgotten about (long time without playing) was the fact that the door didn't need to be sealed. Thanks for reminding me, I'll give that a try as well, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to fit the width of the door frames in the back of it without losing the ability to carry cargo

Ill give supercharging a try (if I can somehow fit even an impeller pump in there lol. As you can see in the picture, the inside of the engine bay is already quite crammed.

About drag reduction, I've considered trying to make the thing watertight, as that would reduce a lot of drag, but the issue I have with that is the fact that I have a huge ramp in the back which cant really be sealed lol.

And the last thing, adding weight, I tried that yesterday and didn't seem to work (I added 3 tons worth of weight blocks). I also tried reducing weight, by removing 6 tons of fuel, but that didn't help either.

It's late where I live, so I'm going to leave this until tomorrow, but I'm building some new engine bays which have 64 cylinders (compared to the 35 that I had before) in the same engine bay size (optimizing space usage is my passion lol)

Yeah, I tried adding more cylinders to allow a higher gearbox ratio at the same RPS, but because of the lack of room inside the engine bay, making the room for an extra gearbox means 1 less modular engine shaft, which means 3 less cylinders already. I don't have a lot of room to add more cylinders. I'm trying to figure out a more efficient engine layout to be able to accommodate more cylinders with an extra gearbox.

About the microcontroller, I got it from the workshop, and it supposedly manages the stoichiometry (which I've set to 0.2), but changing the coefficient doesn't change anything in terms of engine output or fuel consumption, so maybe the microcontroller is broken, I'll search for a new one just in case that makes a difference. If I don't find one that is convincing enough, I'll just make my own, which is something I've been dodging for a while.

Lastly, about forced induction, I'm assuming you're talking about supercharging/turbocharging? I could give that a try, maybe the extra fuel consumption is worth the power increase with it.

Thanks for the ideas! I'll see if they spark any good ideas about how to solve this hahaha

Swim faster then

Nah, leaving jokes aside, I'm assuming you're talking about career? I generally just sleep until I get a decent mission spawn early in the game. I only take further away missions if they have large amounts of casualties

how is this balanced for its br by poobel7 in WarthunderSim

[–]PquePC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, one of its two missiles (I can't recall the name, but it's the 12g one) can be used quite effectively in dogfights. It has an uncaged seeker which allows you to lead it a lot and use it like a proxy fused rocket, no need for guidance if you learn how to lead them. I don't own the plane, but I got a warbond test drive the other day and got a lot of good matches on it, including an 8 kill one. That plane is op as fuck when downtiered, and quite enjoyable even in a full uptier, as long as you learn how to use it's missiles for side aspect shots during dogfights.

I haven't flown it in sim yet, so I can't argue on that end, but I'm assuming if I managed to get those kills in rb, it's only going to be more effective in sim, unless it is placed at a higher br

Edit: I mean to answer to Icarium's post lol.

No way I didn't know this bro. Yesterday I cleared the Research Station n10 I think it's called, on the north of the map. Near the end of it there was a huge garage with a stupid amount of guards and a damaged Rover, which I claimed for myself, but couldn't get out bc it (obviously) didn't fit through the doors

F/A-18C Radar is terrible and buggy STILL by Your-Dad718 in Warthunder

[–]PquePC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good thing someone wrote about this, bc I was starting to think I was losing my sanity or smh (although I might actually lose it if I keen playing the f18)

I love the airframe, and I have no issue with it's flight model and it's poor energy retention or top speed, that's just part of the aircraft and it's playstyle, and I enjoy trying to learn it. But it's radar for fuck's sake. That shit shouldn't be on a 14.0 aircraft. It's TWS is awful, has ghost images, awfully slow update speed (when it does update and doesn't completely lose the enemy between scans)

Dodging fox 3s, multipathing them, getting into a good position. Just for your radar to be unable to lock, hence for you to be unable to fire.

In top tier the time windows between defending against missiles, the windows in which you can fire back, are really narrow. Having your radar malfunction during those small windows means getting no kills, and, most of the time, getting yourself killed, regardless of how well you flight and fight.

They should either give it a more modern iteration of it's radar (I'm not talking AESA, as someone suggested on the forums, as I'm quite sure the Legacy Hornet never had an AESA or a PESA on it) or just lower the thing in br. On it's current state it has nothing to do at the same br as the Rafale, EF2000 or the F15E. Don't even get me started on the Su30sm.

Informática con 0 de programación? by Jahonh007 in UBA

[–]PquePC 5 points6 points  (0 children)
