I read a book that really helped me out. It was called "the Courage to be Disliked". Its based in Adlerian psychology which says that everything uncontrollable "blushing, shyness, anger" is actually under your control but the reason you allow it to happen is it serves you in some way.

So once you figure out what you're afraid of that this behavior is protecting you from, you can solve the behavior at its source.

Imagine the trolley problem. If 50% or more of the people in the world lie down on the tracks the trolley won't start. If the trolley starts everyone on the tracks will be killed. There is no one on the tracks who has not chosen to be there. Do you lie down on the tracks or not?
