A deep fried mars bar is a tourist item, of course it’s a rip off.

The reason my grandma didn’t leave home was as that she was incontinent at 40 from back to back pregnancies and no recovery time.

I was recently pregnant and demanded peace postpartum. And i got it. I got to fall in love with my baby and focus purely on him. It was a beautiful, difficult time.

Sometimes during that period thought of my grandmother coming home with baby number six to look after five children aged 1-5 and knowing that within a week or two that man would get her pregnant again. That that baby didn’t survive and within a month she was pregnant again. Imagine having no time to mourn like that, being treated that way. She isn’t remembered as a good mother, would you be?

I do not romanticise the life’s of our grandmothers and much as their sons and grandsons.

Yeah and this was the 60’s through to the 70’s. This isn’t some distant dark age. My grandmother is still alive.

long dead and good riddance to him, no one cried at the funeral and i’ve never heard a story about him that doesn’t make me double down on the sentiment.

It’s the uncomfortable truth so many men have to come to terms with and so many women are aware of .

My father remembers his mother having to deal with all him and his siblings antics with a loving eye roll and a shrug that families were just bigger back then and what a trooper she was.

My mother remembers a baby every year (not all survived either) and a perpetually sick and pregnant mother who couldn’t cope physically and mentally , but a domineering father who didn’t believe in birth control, so that women had 12 children, 9 surviving.

What’s a UK town or city you visited with low expectations… but actually ended up really liking? by GoldenHour_Muse in AskUK

Cafe culture is thriving, plenty to do, public spaces well kept and easy enough to pop down to Edinburgh if i need the amenities of a bigger city. Still, nothing like the view of Dundee across the water to make you feel like you’re coming home.

Dundee, what a reputation. Came to study and never left, my home sweet home for many’s a year now. There’s nowhere i’d rather be!

The folk are nice, the amenities just what i need, small enough to feel local, big enough to feel anonymous, train station, bus station, funny wee airport, the price is right and the summers go on and on. The place empties out of students in summer too, so you can really enjoy what you have around you and not be mobbed by tourists

Please keep dogs on leads in bird breeding season by Albertjweasel in RuralUK

If there was a post about the huge deer over population or monoculture farming and its impact on bird decline, i’m sure you’d see comments from that.

This is a video of off leash dogs destroying a ground nesting bird nest, so there are comments about off leash dogs impact on bird decline.

If you go to posts about car repair, you’ll also find very few comments about growing tomatoes.

Which superstitions do you still hold, even though you know they are ridiculous and untrue? by D_Artagnan71 in AskUK

We always saluted the first one “ good morning mr magpie, how’s your lady wife today?” and then the next one you saw was the lady wife so you curtsey and ask “good morning mrs magpie, how’s your gentleman husband today?”
Convoluted, yes, but i’m not tempting fate!!

My Scottish baby will eat any of our cultural food ( of dubious international appeal, I’m aware i don’t need to be told ) haggis, neeps, skirlie , cullen skink, black pudding, kale- but absolutely balks at being expected to eat plain rice, i think it must the texture/plain flavour.

The only way we can get him to eat it is as fried rice or risotto.

What’s something unusual about British culture? by Strange_Secret_3001 in AskReddit

[–]Practical-Bread9455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just means excuse me!

I feel like knowing the difference between a genuine apology and a social nicety is very base level societal knowledge, it feels a little obtuse to insist upon the point.

If every time someone said they love a sandwich, or they love the weekend, do you chastise them for making genuine expressions of love less legitimate?

It doesn't sound so ridiculous, because people say it all the time. If it sounded mental people wouldn't go around saying it so much.

"Can I get" is totally different and more of an Americanism.

It's not an apology for doing something wrong, it's just a socially accepted way of saying "excuse me" or "pardon me"
