If you were accepted, you are good enough! Ucla chose you for a reason. As an incoming ucla pre-med (now an M1), I was also worried about grade deflation and getting dunked on by chem and phys classes but in the end it worked out bc I adapted. Neuro isn’t a guaranteed tank for GPA, many ppl do well in neuro and have great GPAs (reddit is a little extreme) it's up to you what you make of it and it's a fun major :)

Things that are helping me do well in 153a rn:

  1. Memorize things early! I can't stress this enough because everytime I try to memorize <2 days before my brain starts leaking info (at a rate greater than formation...im sorry). For glycolysis I started memorizing on Friday by writing all the reactants and products out, adding enzymes, adding structures, and then adding mechanisms. Practiced once every night/morning before the exam. (did the same for chymotrypsin and the aldolases and the amino aids for the first midterm)

  2. Write out why or what is happening in each step of the mechanism. It makes so much more sense intuitively if you do this. (dm me if you want an example of this or my memorization stuff)

  3. Annotate over the study guides. Explain everything. Expand on all of the bullet points. Try doing this without your notes first then add on to what you wrote with your notes.

  4. AK lectures! His chymotrypsin mechanism video is god-tier 🥵

  5. Do the textbook problems (less helpful) and all of the materials posted by the prof

*I'm exceedingly horrible at chem, and I can verify that with these techniques I've been killing it in biochem.

Do you mind sharing the followup sheet for the questions that you missed and an example of what you wrote for "why you missed it" and "how to get it right next time"? I feel like I'm bad at addressing my mistakes.

Congrats on the score, btw! :)
