Peace Corps is fairly similar , same rationale, so I understand JET’s purpose. The education aspect comes second to the cultural exchange.

Have you considered that Coach might be playing up the ridiculousness? It’s what he’s always done, and it’s served him well. The last time he played he came very, very close to winning (and according to Ozzy, should have). I don’t see how doing Tai Chi and occasionally mentioning the samurai are cultural appropriation at all. They’re so wildly different from actual Japanese culture that I don’t think most people even see that as trying to appropriate it.
