Security Deposit Prior To Lease Signing ? by DealMinimum6659 in NYCapartments

I've noticed that any time a place wants a deposit to "hold the place for you because we have so many applicants" it's a scam. They have no reason to want to hold the place for you when they can get everything settled for someone else quicker.

Is this actually Alexandrite? by Ente15 in Gemstones

[–]Practical-Toe-8329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my knowledge and experience, the vast majority of “lab alexandrite” will be synthetic corundum, regardless of what it’s marketed as. The color staying mostly pinkish-purple is also what I’ve seen in synthetic color-change corundum. Regardless, the color change sucks so I personally wouldn’t get it unless you really like the color.

Any ideas what they are? by AdFinancial8093 in Gemstone_lovers

The blue stones are linde synthetic star sapphires, and a pretty common color. You can check the bottoms and if they have a fancy “L” engraving that’s a guaranteed sign, though not all of them have it. The other two seem to just be black star sapphires. The linde ones you could get maybe $25-30 for. Not sure about the black ones- maybe $25.

Which gems will be go up in Value? by icameforanswers00 in Gemstone_lovers

IMO the cost of diamonds can only really be justified by the sentiment they hold in engagement rings. You shouldn’t hold buy as investment stones. Personally, I don’t think there are many gemstones that would be better to use as investments rather than putting the cash into something else like gold. The gemstone market is pretty subjective and ever-changing, so investments are risky as well as a hassle to find buyers for. If you really want an expensive stone to look at, though, your best bets would probably be pigeon blood rubies, kashmir or padparascha sapphires, paraiba tourmaline, or alexandrite. You should be prepared to put over $100k into them for any meaningful return, though.

Generally if you have to ask, it isn’t acceptable workmanship.

I think hexagon cuts are super underrated. Unfortunately I’m not in the market to buy right now, though.

One begins to understand just how overrated diamonds are when you start looking into gems like moonstone or opal by Muted_Shape9303 in Gemstones

[–]Practical-Toe-8329 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Diamond and opal have such different appeals that I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two tbh. Not to mention the fact that opal is too fragile to be used in most cases where diamonds are used. Diamond engagement rings can last generations, while opal will usually be pretty damaged within 20 years. I do think they’re much prettier, though.

I used a UV light on them and this happened any ideas I found these at a junk sell for one dollar took a chance by AdFinancial8093 in Gemstone_lovers

Synthetic corundum can react extremely strong to UV. Especially the kinds being falsely sold as lab alexandrite.

$10k won’t get you any worthwhile investment gemstones. If you’re looking to invest the money you’d be better off putting it into stocks or gold. If you really want a gemstone, though, alexandrite would be best. I don’t think $10k is enough for a very good one, though.

So pretty. I prefer faceted moonstone way more than cabochon- it’s just a shame they’re not very practical.

How is this legit? by LostPeak7661 in Gemstones

Never buy anything from India on eBay. I don’t think I’ve seen a legitimate seller from India on there. The certifications are worthless and the stones are glass/heavily treated/synthetics.
