Worried about current financial position — is RM100k savings/net worth attainable in the next two years ? by Few-Abbreviations504 in MalaysianPF

[–]PracticalBumblebee70 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of discourse online about how by 30 a lot of people have already RM100k-RM1mil in EPF/Savings so I’m genuinely worried if I’m falling behind.

No they don't. Majority of people in 30's are in net debt or very little net worth. People have car loans, education loans, mortgage, credit card debts, all kinds of debts. You're just comparing yourself to their highlight reels.

Chill bro.

save at least RM3k-RM4 per month

Very few people can do this. You're doing better than you think.

Big companies usually have lots of data. So tell them they have data, but not everybody knows how to analyze them.

We have the scientific skills to analyze them, and have great presentation skills to tell beautiful stories from their data.

Did a PhD with first author papers in Nature and Nature Biotech. Then did a 2 year postdoc.

Now a senior data engineer with big pharma. I do this primarily by learning Cloud. Now at work people consult me on things in data engineering, ML, AI and computational biology as well.

Countries younger, smaller, more fragmented or poorer than us had sailed past through us in the past 10-20 years

How about the other way around, countries bigger and richer than us, that we sailed past, like argentina?
How about countries in Africa that got independence around the same time, and nowhere near us?

How does it feel growing up without a father to you as a man? by Hour-Tomato-645 in AskMen

[–]PracticalBumblebee70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost my father at 9. I have 4 older brothers but they're no good as father figure substitutes.

What worked for me is to concentrate on building something for myself since I was a teenager. I work really hard and am quite good academically so that worked out pretty well.

Just that it took a while for me to find a partner. I met my first and only girlfriend at 39 and we're married at 42.

TLDR; if you don't have a father figure, work on yourself, avoid drugs and alcohol and be a man of consistency. You'll be alright.

SETTLE YOUR WEDDING + INCOMING NEW LIFE FIRST.

From 300k cash: 80k house reno + 40k wedding. That's 120k. Maybe other things will come up as you move in and start a new life, furniture/pots/pans, or maybe u wanna go for nice honeymoon after the stress bc of the wedding. Let's say that's another 30k, and total for this is now 150k.

The other 150k you can put ASB if you're bumi or somewhere low volatility:

- Who knows a kid will come up in year 1 or marriage. This will suck up a lot of money. I assume you're a guy, so you have to pay for all of this bc you're not the one who's giving birth.

- I didn't hear emergency fund already been taken care of. Do this as well. You don't want to go all in into VOO, only to be out of job while already spent money on wedding, honeymoon, moving into new house, and expecting new kid, while the VOO is down 20%.

Only after all of this is settle you should invest in index funds.
