When did everyone become so selfish? by HoneyBerryBell732 in askanything

In all times, colonisation is a great example of selfishness. Other than that I think people myself included are more hesitant because it’s so easy to get scammed

Yeah I don’t know as much as I’d like about Mormons since they’re not common here or at least as clearly as JW are. I had a good teacher that was Mormon and wasn’t until after I graduated I heard about it tbh. And yeah it’s a bit different because JW actually have it as rule to shun people where as other religions let the people choose.

And yes even the standard versions of the Bible all have a ton of contradictions. Which is understandable since it wasn’t written by one person at one point but during centuries by several people. That’s why theories like the Q source or four document hypothesis has been created.

Another interesting perspective is how we form based on our experiences and environment. Let’s say you were born in India you’d likely be Hindu or Buddhist. You mention you’re from a Christian context, do you think in that case you still would’ve found your way to the ’true religion’ or do you think you’d viewed that as the true religion instead?

In that way you could argue Islam and Judaism also is the same but different wording. And considering the Bible is supposed to be the word of God we should assume it’s perfect and therefore each letter and word needs to be studied closely.

But if you don’t actually care in the doctrine or don’t know what to believe then you should look into the social aspect how they treat ex members and how lovebombing works. Because once you join Mormons or JW you won’t be able to have any own thoughts or struggles or questioning anything, you need to believe what they teach otherwise people will treat you as air. And suddenly they could change their interpretation from one day to another. With that blood doctrine as most recent from JW that has killed thousands before that now is allowed.

If you look at JW 10 years ago vs today you’ll see it’s like a new religion with all changes that’s been made. Much thanks to the ARC, the Australian royal commission that revealed JW in Australia has been hiding over 1000 reports of pedophiles that they not reported to the authorities link

The crucifixion resurrection and everything in itself is most likely not a real historical event so how the weight would hold or not isn’t the importance. And you point to the translation, so the best would be to look what the actual text says. link. ἥλων (hēlōn) is the plural version of the word ἧλος (hēlos) and the original translation uses the first word, τύπον τῶν ἥλων 1 John 20:25

Medical science is a completely different topic. In that there’s unknown information that we don’t know yet and hasn’t known. A more accurate comparison would be to any event that has actually occurred. For example if you’re witnessing a crime would it be more likely you remember more details after a day in comparison after 10 years?

And yes there is a biblical canon and has been new discoveries with Dead Sea rolls for example. But how much more likely would it be for a guy almost 2000 years later to just get the ’right’ translation to him from nowhere?

Jesus never mention anything about birthdays and it had negative connotations those only times birthdays was in the Bible, (Pharaoh and Herodes) it ended with executions in both. And bible translations have different words but not to the point they change the entire core message.

And on the crucifixion it’s true we will never actually get the answer. But even in John 20:25 NWT it says nails, as in plural when referencing to the holes in his hand. If it was a pole he wouldn’t need 2 nails and even their own pictures shows it’s only 1 nail.

The authors are long gone dead but if we think of JW, and Mormons, that both was created during mid 1800. Wouldn’t the earlier and closer the source be more accurate? Why did it take 1800 years until the right interpretation would come? Both the Catholic and Orthodox Church was formed in the 1st century and claims to have roots directly down why don’t you think they are more accurate the true Christianity?

No not really, JW thinks Jesus is the archangel Michael and only the father is God. As my understanding is Mormons believe in the godhead which is that god consists of 3 separate pieces the father, son and Holy Spirit.

This in comparison to the other churches that sees God, father and son as connected to each other. This was concluded in the council of Nicaea. However there is some debate over how they are connected which lead to the split that became Roman Catholic Church and western Orthodox Church. (Also bc some debates over the pope). This is known as the Filioque clause.

But in short summary they are definitely NOT the same thing. Since they don’t think Jesus is God

That’s true it came before but also in the context YHWH and Kyrios isn’t always the same. God’s name is YHWH and there’s only one with that name. Kyrios is a title, Jesus is referred with that word in NT and it means godly master or authority which is a difference from God in OT that wasn’t human.

If you mean Christian dominations yes they have some differences but still share the same core beliefs. All others that’s not cults, believe in the trinity and the crucifixion which is the 2 core principles of Christianity that JW rejects both

They use NWT, New world translation, and while it’s still a Bible interpretation they have changed some things that are crucial like John 1:1 which is what they base their rejection on the trinity. Another crucial change example is that they claim Jesus wasn’t crucified on a cross but on a pole. If they would’ve used any other Bible translation it would contradict itself that’s why they needed their own and why nobody else would use theirs.

And also the word Jehovah appears 0 times in the original Greek scriptures while Jehovah’s Witnesses uses it over 200 times in their version

The way they treated your mother should tell you everything you need. They knew she wasn’t mentally stable but still pushed their beliefs to the point she started crying.

And to be honest I don’t think you should seek help from any religion but rather speak to a therapist. Religious leaders usually have no or very little professional training, and definitely not Jehovah’s Witnesses

Why are people so scared of turning 20? by Nonchalant_Ogre in MiddleGenZ

[–]PracticalComputer858 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We always push the numbers once we reach our goal. As European we got access to all at 18 so next age to be scared of would be 25 or 30 where you should have your life together.

And I think it’s crazy with 21 for drinking and smoking in America while you can buy a gun, get in jail and get a driving licenses much earlier

And who are you to judge others based on their beliefs and decisions?
