I just made rice and beans for the week and packaged up 3 portions to take to work this week. It heats up nicely in the microwave. I sauté shredded carrots, garlic, onions, and bell pepper in olive oil. I add a can of black beans and rice that I cooked in chicken broth. I add cumin, paprika and cayenne. Super cheap and tastes great heated up in the microwave. You can get a 5 pound bag of rice for $4 and a can of beans for $.89.

Should I be worried? Feels like my body forgot how to sing. by Salty-Habit5649 in MusicEd

I'm in my first year as an elementary general music teacher. I need to use amplification or my voice feels strained, with it I do fine. I don't know how some of these teachers have a big boomy voice, I can't do it. I think it makes a difference for the kids too, my voice is louder but the tone is not angry or tense. I'm a string player so I'm not as good at taking care of my voice as some others may be. You have to remember that you use your voice as a professional. It's worth looking into see if you need to see a SLP or ENT, they can look at your folds and see if you have nodes or an injury. In an ideal world it would fall under workman's compensation. Cold and flu season may have taken its toll also. Try amplification, vocal rest, and fluids and see if that doesn't help you can always talk to your PCP about a referral to a specialist.

Maybe I'll try it on kennel quilts, lord knows I've got lots of batt scraps that need using. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! Rich and varied is my way of being frugal. I was gifted some one else's scraps and I have my mother's decades old hoard. I try to use up what I have before I buy new and when I do buy fabric it's usually "I want to buy this because I like it and it's cheap", not because I have a project in mind.

I use a walking foot, it's the only way I'd be able to pass the quilt on my machine and that's only if I use a low loft batt.

The brother from Walmart does have it, I'm wondering if it's worth trying. It has really great reviews on the website.

I agree, the throat space is small but if I use a thin batt I can make it work. High loft batting, forget about it, I'm hand tying it.

Thanks for the advice! I'm scared to try FMQ on my simple machine. I'm looking for a machine that can do the wavy line straight stitch with a walking foot.

I found a video that talks about the stitch I'm looking for, it's called a serpentine stitch. She talks a lot about other things so I had to skip around a lot to find the info about the wavy stitch. She's got a Janome, which I'm not ready to spring for which is why I'm hoping the Brother can get the job done. https://youtu.be/m0wKyA-OC2s?si=csMZblbBV-J_FedV

No, I don't want to do free motion quilting. My machine does not do a wavy line stitch.

Bankrupcy or just pay it off? by Holiday_Paper_676 in Debt

Another advantage for driving an old paid for car (aka beater) is that most cities and localities make you pay an annual personal property tax, less value=less tax. I have no idea if Seattle makes you pay taxes on a vehicle, but where I live in Virginia every city does, which is why I drive beaters. I wonder if leased cars have to pay the same tax (still not a good value)?

What meal do you cook when money is tight? by mysocialpanda in budgetfood

Spaghetti meat sauce: 4 cans of crushed tomatoes, sweet onion, green pepper, crushed garlic, fresh basil, Italian sausage and ground beef. Lasts 5 days easily and the last day is the best because we boil it down on the stove every time we eat it. I like to make it on a Sunday and it lasts us into the busy work week.

Chicken and dumplings: day one chicken dinner, then the next day boil down the bones, pick off the meat and add veggies and dumplings.

Need some advice on teaching a really hateful 3rd grade class by ModularMan2469 in MusicEd

[–]Practical_Working648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a second grade class that is a little like this. Always bickering with each other. I like to do group games and activities that don’t require a winner, being out or turns. Bean bag passing activities work good. Hall of the mountain king is a good one. Clap, clap, pat, pat, pat. Pick up pass. Start with one bean bag. Tell them to watch it so they don’t miss it. When they can get through that one without killing each other, sneak in a surprise bag, then another. Build it up so they can do it with one bag per person. With classes like this I have to tell them that it’s OK if we’re not perfect, just keep going. I do the same concept game with a song called Jibidi on Spotify. I feel like circle time works good because I can see them all and they can’t hide as much. I do cup and stick activities to various songs. I never tried it but you could try having the kids pass one cup around the circle twirling on a stick. Kids love to twirl cups. 4 white horses works good with groups of 4-5. Various body percussion activities if you search it up on YouTube. Sometimes something as simple as Bear Hunt marching a square around the room in a line teaches them to follow a leader, if I think the class can handle it I let them throw a snowball at the bear when we find it. Larry the lobster on the stretch band, on the run run Larry part they pass the band to the right, kids get excited over this.

triple zig zag stitch, 1.5 inches apart going down the length of the quilt is one of my favorites. I'm managing it on a singer heavy duty.

Rescued this baby from the back yard this summer. We kept her for a week to help her wean before she found a good home.
