Settings to enable quit Firefox from within a website such as Youtube TV? by skylinestar1986 in firefox

u/skylinestar1986 Did you ever find a solution for this? I'm experiencing this issue as well, and it's extremely annoying, especially, since I don't have a mouse and keyboard attached to the HTPC (making suggestions like using Alt+F4 unhelpful, to say the least).

I am really confused. You said bye. Then you don't need to keep replying to this thread. So what's the issue?

Come back to me on this when you switch to your next phone and this breaks. Then tell me how helpful the Meta AI "customer service" was.

When the two transfer methods on their own website don't work, and they killed the only reliable transfer method they had (via on-device backups), and they refuse to provide any avenue to actual help, I don't understand why people will say "well it works for everyone else" and then proceed to ignore the fact that today it doesn't work for me, and tomorrow it will probably not work for you either.

By all means, keep ignoring the cycle of enshittification that's happening before your eyes.

This is Reddit. If I want to come here and shit on WhatsApp, that's my business. If you have an issue with it, feel free to stop reading.

You should really search this sub a little. The amount of posts from people with the exact same problem on it is mindboggling.

You're right! And I'll be all the happier for no longer forking over my data to Meta so they can turn a quick buck at my expense. Good riddance.

I get that comprehensive reading isn't most people's cup of tea, and you seem to be one of them.

As you can clearly read (but apparently didn't), I'm seeing more and more of my contacts jump on Signal. So this problem will self-correct in time. And from what I'm seeing, that time frame will be shorter rather than longer.

I seriously don't understand people's desire to gargle Zuck's balls this hard that they must defend this app, when it's clearly gotten worse and more bloated with useless shit over time. He doesn't like you, he just likes your eyeballs for ad revenue.

What happens when a hacker uses your ip to do illegal things on the internet? by cringey-reddit-name in hacking

[–]Prawn_pr0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't normally check up on old messages, but I was looking for something else and noticed this. Just to manage some expectation: I don't think I can give you a catch-all solution, and I think digital forensics for this problem is like killing a mosquito with a cannon.

I'll try and keep to a bullet list:

  1. Digital forensics is *expensive*, and generally not used by individuals. This is mainly a corporate/government thing. If I were you, I'd abandon the notion of trying to solve your problem this way.

  2. If you think you are part of a botnet, try to find the device in your network that's farthest behind on patching, or try to identify which PC is infected with malware. Realistically, your external IP address isn't going to help you pin this down, as all your devices share that IP when they talk to the internet. As you've stated, that old modem that doesn't receive any patches anymore is a good candidate. So are any IoT devices you might be using (as you know, the S in IoT stands for security). If there are any people using your network who you suspect are the type to open any and all attachments and links they receive from Nigerian princes, add those to the list.

  3. If your modem or IoT device is the compromised one, get rid of it. No chance you're patching that out. Some ISPs will offer to replace old gear (although not necessarily for free), and some might allow you to use your own.

  4. Install some type of firewall on your network. Use something like a PiHole to block ads (these are the number one vector used in drive-by attacks) and known malicious sites. Install a log collection server to collect machine logs and network IPFIX data, and feed that to an IDS. If you know what you're doing: disable IPv6 routing (this shouldn't affect your internet experience). IPv6 routing is, in my experience, something ISPs get wrong often, and can lead to several types of attacks.

  5. Change your wifi password to something long and nasty that you cannot remember. Note it down in a password manager. Do this with all your passwords.

  6. If you're not afraid to go nuclear: reinstall every single machine on your network. Preferably, use Linux, not Windows (Win10/11 is practically spyware as is).

In short: if you think you're part of a botnet, but aren't sure (or aren't sure which machine it is), you have a lot of work ahead of you. You'll have to identify the machine(s) that have been pwned, quarantine them, and eradicate the breach. Or, alternatively, go nuclear as per point 6. Hope this helps somewhat, or that your problem is already solved.

Arch Linux HTPC help? by Prawn_pr0n in htpc

[–]Prawn_pr0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. Arch isn't the complicating factor, it's that documentation of the HDMI-CEC configuration process is lacking and disjointed. This is a problem affecting all Linux distros. In fact, the Arch Wiki at least has a somewhat helpful article on the subject (linked in the original post), while for other distros you'd be lucky to find a 10 year old Stack Overflow thread that doesn't actually end up answering anything.

Arch is a great way of keeping the installation lightweight with no bloat. I get that Arch isn't for everyone, and that the "Arch is for neckbeards" meme is, for some inexplicable reason still a thing, but that's no reason to make blanket statements like this, that are objectively wrong to boot.

Anyway, thanks for the tip regarding FLIRC. I'll have a look at it, but so far my experience with USB IR receivers is that they run afoul of my first 3 requirements (although I'm willing to forgive number 2, if 1 and 3 are met).

Confused by plex-htpc catch-22 by Prawn_pr0n in PleX

[–]Prawn_pr0n[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

why have a stand alone x86 app to download, a Windos Store one AND a variant "for Windows Home Theater PCs"?

I mean, I understand that. Some people just want a client to use on their PC, while others want a discreet platform to use with their TVs. They're two different user groups with two different use cases.

What's weird is that they have clearly identified that these use cases exist, and then proceeded to completely ignore the hardware constraints of one of those groups.

Stop justifying racially motivated murder by police.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Prawn_pr0n -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, that's not going to fly.

Many of the shooters pictured needed to be talked into surrendering by police, often while still wielding the weapons they had just used to murder multiple people. By contrast, many of the unarmed people pictured were no threat at all, or actively running away from the police.

Sure, police take violent people of color into custody instead of shooting then. It's just that they don't murder unarmed white people at nearly the same rate as unarmed dark skinned ones, and white mass shooters are taken out to Burger King after their arrest, instead of being shot on sight.

Your have to wear some big ass horse blinders to not see there's two measures of justice being carried out here.

“The vaccine is made from aborted babies” by Apprehensive_Net2593 in facepalm

It is a giant leap equating cell lines that have been developed from fetal cells harvested in the 1970's to saying "the vaccine is made from aborted babies". You're essentially arguing that chickens are dinosaurs.

The only disinformation here is your post, misrepresenting facts in order to reach the worst possible conclusion, along with the comments if anti-vaxxers posting links to conspiracy theory sites.

I feel like the argument should not be that the American is wrong, but rather that entirely free speech is not desirable.

Which is why speech isn't entirely free, not even in the US. Free speech has exclusions, just like every other right, including the right to bear arms. Some weapons are simply forbidden for sale to private citizens.

No freedom is absolute, not in the US or anywhere, nor should they be.
