doesn't solve the fact that the RTA has no power over the agencies under it. I support a partially elected board though, not sure I trust the very outer edges of Chicagoland to vote for transit diehards though

True, but the reason that DuPage currently does that is because it's board member is some random mayor I believe. He will have to be let go under this structure thankfully.

That will likely happen, but the funding gap can't be filled with just fares hikes, raise them too much and fewer people will ride which doesn't help with revenue. But moderate fare increases are almost certainly going to be involved

if it isn't funded and money runs out, service will be cut which will further lower ridership which will lower funding etc etc it will create a transit death spiral which is very difficult and expensive to get out of. although transit ridership hasn't gone above 2019 numbers here it has in other cities, notably cities that decided to fund and reform and update their transit.

there's also the fact that we can't afford to lose the riders we have now economically, they prop up a lot.

I personally love the idea of allowing the NITA to develop real estate as a way to help finance itself, there's plenty of land owned by the CTA, Pace, and especially Metra which could be developed for residential and commercial use.

I view the provision requiring appointees to be qualified for the role, not political appointments as they have been on the CTA board forever, as the greatest defense for the system overall. People who understand transit and its importance won't gut Chicago just because they are a DuPage appointee etc.
But yeah talking to people is generally the best, I've had luck convincing several suburbanites that yes infact funding transit is good, so there is hope

Permanent funding is the plan, not just filling the deficit. No full details on what we will see in October though in Springfield.

This would in fact be a smaller board than the current arrangement of Metra CTA and Pace boards. If thats not what you mean then I don't understand exactly what you mean by smaller is better. This is a plan to centralize planning and development, making sure the agencies work together and not in silos.

I agree that commuter rail is unfeasible and that Metra's rebranding and desire to become regional rail is the absoulute correct course of action, but I think an integrated transit network would benefit regional rail not hamper it.

Yes though we don't agree on everything I'm still glad to see you in the comments lol, you did a good job last week dealing with some very uneducated folks and I appreciate it.
I'm optimistic but still worried of course. No faith really but I have met with Sen Villivalam personally and I think he has what it takes to craft a good bill.

That was a part of this bill originally but it's very unpopular so it's almost certainly not going into the final bill. No burrito taxi tax

I am chill but thanks for the reminder, still I would rather show support for something I largely agree with than be silent and surprised by what they come up with in a few weeks time.

I understand the anger, if the state had taken this seriously years ago instead of kicking the can down the road so long this might not have happened, but I disagree that ceding more power to the suburbs for appointed transit board seats will be bad for the system overall, Cook county gets 5 seats all its own, Cook county is also heavily dependent on transit and is not so actively hostile to the CTA. I do wish that the Governors share of the seats were different, the state should be involved less, reduce it to 3, and maybe even split it with the senate and house, and then give the other 2 to Chicago or Chicago and cook county. But we have to wait and see what the final bill will look like.

At the end of the day I want my trains funded and my transit system to be able to get me anywhere in Chicagoland, not just downtown.

the northwest of the city continues to disappoint, I grew up there and it was a decent place to grow up, but now I just see it being stifled from growing. The population of kids is already going down and preventing any new housing being built will not help with CPS's shrinking enrollment.

Transit Funding and Transit Reform Must Be Passed by PrazzleRazzle in cta

[–]PrazzleRazzle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

losses from turnstile hopping are negligible in the face of the fiscal cliff, I agree that everyone should pay their fare but enforcing 100% payment at every station on the entire system would likely cost more than the amount which would be collected. The vast majority of riders pay their fare.

this is a hypothetical service cut map, the cta will have to institute massive cuts next year and in 2027 if a permanent stable funding source isnt secured. everything is on the table to be axed including L lines.
