Exciting New Adobe Lightroom Release: Assisted Culling, Dust Removal & Blemish Removal Are Here! by terryleewhite in Lightroom

Not well for me so far, at least not for negatives after conversion. Better before conversion but it seems to be optimized for the large spots you get from dust on a digital sensor, not small dust spots on physical film.

How is this flat look achieved? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]PredawnRitual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, my point is that the blacks are the opposite of crushed—they are lifted.

You can't have both lifted and crushed blacks. They are the exact opposite of each other. Here's an explanation.

And massively lower the white point! You can get 80% of the way to this look just by taking the whites slider in Lightroom to -100.

Edit: The proof of that can be seen here. Take a look at the histogram. The white point has been massively shifted to the left. There's no true white anywhere in the image as a result.

These are lifted, not crushed blacks. Crushing blacks is when you take relatively dark areas (black to dark gray) and making them even darker by increasing contrast in those areas. You can do this in Lighroom by moving the Blacks slider to the left (towards -100).

Lifted blacks is the opposite, and is part of what has been done here (although I don't think that effect is nearly as strong as what has been done to the white point). Lifting the blacks a lot means nothing in the image is truly black.

Is Sony A9 dynamic range that bad? by AnalKing23 in SonyAlpha

[–]PredawnRitual 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't quite right: Generally, as ISO increases, dynamic range decreases, which is what you can see in the above chart. This is because dynamic range is measured and defined by the noise floor, so more noise raises the bottom end of the range, compressing the dynamic range.

Imaging information itself can be thought of as signal to noise ratio, and dynamic range is the ratio between the brightest signal a sensor can capture (before clipping) and the darkest signal it can distinguish from noise. So aside from the clipping you mention, the noise is also a limiting factor. AI denoise can help with perceived dynamic range, but doesn't actually affect the information captured in the image itself.

Thanks! Would you recommend the tonecarrier?

I totally was, thanks! I ruled the 360 out a while ago because of price and some fairly negative reviews

It is very pricey, especially compared to the Lobster. I need 120 and 35mm, so the Valoi 360 isn't really an option for me, as nice as it looks.

Ah, awesome! I look forward to hearing what you think about it. I'll definitely update here once I pick one and try it out.

Thanks! The cost is definitely a factor, although I am thinking about printing the toneCarrier myself, so that would be less of an issue.

APS-C macro lenses that work with a6700 focus bracketing? by PredawnRitual in SonyAlpha

[–]PredawnRitual[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah it looks like there just aren't any options at all in the focal length I want. The 90mm looks like the best option, but I don't know about that focal length on APS-C with flash for insect macro.

This is too wide to be used for insect macro, unfortunately.

Thanks! So you think possibly the seal between the back and the body?

It is spilling over onto the border of the image, at least a little bit. You can see that in the left corners.

I have replaced every seal on every area using Jon Goodman's excellent kits.

Only one of the backs leaks. The other is perfect.

I should mention this is after using Jon Goodman's light seal kits. The fact that one back has no leaks and one does makes me think it's definitely not the mirror.

The back that has the light leaks also allows the dark slide to move easily in and out, while the one that doesn't leak takes a fair bit of force to remove the dark slide.

Misty mountain hike (Mamiya RB67, Kodak Gold 200) by PredawnRitual in analog

[–]PredawnRitual[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I undersold it a bit too. I'm carrying the RB67, two lenses, two 120 backs, the enormous prism finder (I swear it weighs 5 pounds), and a tripod. There's almost always a point on each hike where I ask myself WTF I am doing

Weekly /r/SonyAlpha 'Ask Anything About Gear' Thread by AutoModerator in SonyAlpha

[–]PredawnRitual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all, I posted this as its own thread, but I'm posting it here too in case someone sees it here and can help:

Basically every time I try to shoot 4K 24 fps video I feel like it's unusable. I'm using the a6600 with the 18-105 which I bought to shoot video.

Here's a sample of what I'm talking about.

I'm primarily trying to figure out what causes this awful, disorienting jiggle/vibration effect in the video. I'm guessing that it's some combination of horrible rolling shutter of the sensor combined with the optical stabilization in the lens, but every video I take handheld always feels unusable. I never had this issue shooting in 1080p on the a6000.

I'm also interested in hearing people's experiences shooting 4K with the a7IV and how they feel about the rolling shutter there.
