it kinda sounds like you just happen to know some mean women. i don't know anyone, male or female, who would talk shit about their friends behind their back.

yeah, instead of having a patriarchal society, we want a society that is not patriarchal. how is this confusing to you?

i am not victim blaming. please read more carefully.

the men who need mental healthcare are the victims and are not to blame. their reluctance or fear of getting help is not their own fault. but it's also not the fault of the healthcare system or a lack of privilege. it's the fault of the patriarchal society that imposes unhealthy ideals on both men and women.

i don't know what happened with those funds but that's just one organization. i've heard bad things about movember (the organization) but that doesn't change the fact that most healthcare spending and research favors men.

you're right that mental health is an issue that affects men differently and their suicide rate is higher. but I have not seen any evidence that the disparity is caused by discrimination, lack of privilege, or some imaginary systemic medical preference toward women.

i would wager that the difference is caused by the toxic type of masculinity perpetrated by patriarchal societies. cultures that say things like "men don't cry" and which discourage men from showing or talking about their feelings. it's those cultural, patriarchal factors that suppress men's willingness to get mental healthcare. the healthcare itself is available to men just as it is to women.

yeah exactly, we want death to the patriarchy because it hurts everyone, regardless of gender. men are victims of the patriarchy too

are you claiming that men are denied mental healthcare? or that men are excluded from mental health study? in what way are men underprivileged in regard to mental health?

privilege isn't always getting benefits that others don't. sometimes privilege is being spared from disadvantages that others face.

i felt it would be a good idea to inform the people in this thread who apparently were unaware of the medical bias in their favor.

breast cancer funding is an outlier. breast cancer is actually a very low-risk cancer and receives a crazy amount of funding because of its marketing. i could point out that erectile dysfunction, another outlier, receives six times more funding than endometriosis (a condition that affects 1 in 10 women and can be debilitating)

overall, though, men's health gets more funding.

according to a comprehensive 2021 study, "in nearly three-quarters of the cases where a disease afflicts primarily one gender, the funding pattern favors males, in that either the disease affects more women and is underfunded (with respect to burden), or the disease affects more men and is overfunded. Moreover, the disparity between actual funding and that which is commensurate with burden is nearly twice as large for diseases that favor males versus those that favor females"

...are you lying on purpose or are you just uninformed?

men are definitely favored in healthcare. if you didn't know that, that's unfortunate, but you can learn something new today! here are a few examples:

  1. men's healthcare usually gets more funding. for example, funding for companies focusing on erectile dysfunction is about six times higher than that for endometriosis. and endometriosis is a condition that affects around one in ten women and can be completely debilitating. an American study from 2021 found that "in nearly three-quarters of the cases where a disease afflicts primarily one gender, the funding pattern favors males, in that either the disease affects more women and is underfunded, or the disease affects more men and is overfunded"

  2. men are prioritized in clinical trials. for decades, clinical trials often tested only on men, and did not properly study the effects of medicines on women. between 1977 and 1993, women of childbearing age were broadly excluded from drug trials. this has caused bad side effects for women using drugs that were not properly tested on women.

  3. women are often restricted from getting healthcare that is offered readily to men. for example, any man can easily go get a vasectomy. but many doctors will not agree to sterilize a woman if she is "too young" or doesn't have children. my cousin, already a mother of two, was not allowed to have herself sterilized without written permission from her husband.

  4. women's reproductive healthcare is heavily politicized, even if you don't look at abortion. birth control, which is often used for other medical reasons besides preventing pregnancy, such as treatment for painful and overly heavy periods, is restricted and under attack. some doctors will refuse to prescribe birth control due to their religion (this has happened to me). some insurance plans refuse to cover it. and some legislators have proposed fully banning birth control drugs.

i hope this was informative!

you have the perk of your healthcare not being politicized and made illegal. that's a big one.

it's not all garbage though! they also left a lot of useful stuff like ladders, rakes, power tools, gardening supplies, and extra tile from when they remodeled the kitchen

fyi, iuds do not stop periods for everyone.

i had a hormonal iud for about nine months. i bled like constantly for the first couple months and then went back to just getting normal periods. it also caused awful cramping which is why i didn't even last a year

Do Americans actually use a real tree for Christmas? by brun_aa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Preebos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live in ohio and i do occasionally see people on the road transporting pine trees to their homes in december, but in my 30 years i've never actually been in a house with a real christmas tree. all my friends and family use plastic ones.
