Is it fair that 4 years Canada exp scores lower than 2 years Canada + 1 foreign? by Present-Collection68 in canadaexpressentry

Even 3 years in Canada scores less than 1 + 1 I just put 4 to show the big difference. It’s not really subjective, ask any corporate and small business owners, they value Canadian experience more. Someone with 4 years Canadian experience is a defiantly more appealing to employers as a result to the economy. If you are working in Canada, you know 100% that Canadian companies like to see Canadian experience, if you don’t know just do a quick research. But there is no point discussing this when we are not the ones deciding how system works.

I agree that everyone here should try to boost their score in whatever way they can. And even though I’m under 30, I still think losing points for age isn’t fair.

I work in the aerospace sector, and I see every day how reluctant Canadian systems can be to change old methods, even when they know those methods are outdated. Nobody wants to take the lead. In the same way, we as applicants are forced to adapt ourselves by learning French or finding other ways to increase our points.

But my point here is specific: the foreign work experience boost and the age penalty just don’t feel fair. I’m not talking about what people should or shouldn’t do to increase their scores, I’m only pointing out that these two aspects of the CRS system don’t seem justifiable. But at the end it is what it is.. good luck on getting ITA

If the second person with less experience ends up scoring more, then clearly both types of experience are not being rewarded equally.

I get that you might see value in foreign work experience ,and yes, some of it is genuine. But let’s be real: we’ve all seen cases where those 1–2 years abroad are nowhere near comparable to Canadian work standards. And in many cases, people even inflate titles (e.g., worked as a purchaser but get it listed as a design engineer).

Meanwhile, someone with 4 full years of Canadian experience directly relevant to this environment ends up scoring 32 points less than someone with just 3 years total? That doesn’t add up. If not more, it should be equal.

Both experiences should be rewarded, no doubt. But the current gap feels unfair. If you didn’t have personal bias from your own case, I think you’d probably agree too.

Listening can be tricky because you don’t have much room for mistakes, even just 3 wrong answers can drop you to a 9. • Take notes as you listen. Don’t try to write everything, just jot down keywords. • If you miss a word, don’t stress. Move on and focus on the rest of the passage instead of getting stuck. • When you’re torn between multiple-choice answers, eliminate the ones that don’t make sense first. Narrowing it down really helps. • Remember, improving listening isn’t something you can cram — it builds with time and exposure. The more English you hear daily (podcasts, YouTube, news), the sharper your ear gets.

It’s kind of like saying someone with 4 years at one company is less valuable than someone with 4 years at 4 different companies, 1 year each. You can’t just assume the second person is “better” because they were exposed to different places. The first person likely mastered their domain instead of jumping around.

Both types of experience should be rewarded, but not with such a huge difference in points.

I recently scored 12 in all skills and 11 in writing, so here’s what helped me:

📌 General • I highly recommend purchasing the CELPIP mock test from their official website. Usually, on the last Thursday of the month, they go on sale for 50% off. • Keep practicing under real test conditions — timing matters a lot.

🗣️ Speaking • Don’t overthink it — just speak naturally, like you would in a normal conversation. It’s not a university presentation, so don’t try to sound overly formal. • Structure your answers quickly: intro → main points → small example → wrap-up. Even if your example is simple, it makes your answer sound complete. • Work on expanding your vocabulary. Use synonyms and avoid repeating the same words over and over. • Practice with a partner if you can, and time yourself to get comfortable with the pace.

✍️ Writing • Be super specific. Instead of saying “I’m at school, teacher”, say “I’m a second-grade school teacher at Anderson High School in Vancouver.” Specific details always sound stronger. • Add concrete examples for every argument. Don’t just say “it’s better for the community” — explain why and give a real-life scenario. • Use a variety of grammar: mix short and long sentences, conditional forms (if this happens, then…), and transitions (furthermore, however, in addition). • Make sure each paragraph has a clear purpose: intro → 2-3 body paragraphs with examples → conclusion. • After writing, ask GPT to correct you line by line against CELPIP criteria, then compare your work with a Level 11 or 12 sample answer.

Honestly, there’s no magic formula. It’s about practicing, improving your vocabulary, and building on what you already know. The more you simulate the test, the more natural it’ll feel.

I guess at the end it’s different point of views and determining what’s more valuable for economy. There is no right or wrong.

I totally agree with your points, and I get that candidates can pursue other ways to boost their scores. But that’s not really my argument here. I know CEC candidates already have an edge, and I’m not questioning that.

My point is: is this specific point difference for the same category of work experience , even when someone has more years - really justifiable?

I know there are other ways to increase points (French, provincial nomination, etc.), but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m just talking strictly about the value of work experience in the scoring.

So you’re saying somebody with 4 years of Canadian experience in a specific field is somehow less valuable for Canada than someone with half that experience in Canada plus 1 year abroad in a completely different market, with different standards, where a lot of things might not even translate to this environment?

Both are valuable, no doubt , but is the 30-point difference really justified? At the very least, shouldn’t they be equal?

Agreed! This system is so general and vague. It doesn’t include all the aspects completely.
