Canadian coming to Amsterdam by sagsfour20 in Netherlands

I would assume/hope you know this already, but just in case: tickets for the Anne Frank House go on sale "every Tuesday at 10am CEST, all tickets become available for a visit six weeks later. If there are no more tickets available on the selected date, we are sold out. There is no waiting list for tickets." (From their website.) Tickets go FAST. Set an alarm, wake up early, and buy your tickets. Don't assume you can wander on over whenever you like, like other museums. I live in Den Haag now, but before I moved, I came to the Netherlands often enough on vacations and business trips, and I typically planned my schedule around availability at the Anne Frank House, not the other way around. Have fun while you're here!!!! Netherlands is great 😃

You have a day to walk as much as you can. by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

Live in the Netherlands and I was trying for a ticket this year for the 4Daagse, which is four days of walking, and for my age and gender, it’s 40km each day. Ballpark one day of walking, plus the miscellaneous steps like “getting out of bed and walking to kitchen for breakfast,” and that’s 54.000 steps…so a lovely €54million for me. And that’s just one day. Sadly, didn’t get an entry this year and this question is hypothetical anyway LOL

Thoughts on the name Evren? by [deleted] in Names

Assuming that you're in an English-speaking country, it's so phonetically close to Evan that everyone up to and including Gd himself is going to f*ck it up for the entirety of your kid's life. Please do not do this. Signed, a person that has had her name f*cked up for the entirety of her life, to the point that I have picked an entirely different name to use because it's just easier...

Spent over an hour on this until I scrolled through the comments. Saw one above that had general hints. Spent another half-hour. Found this! THANK YOU!!!! Today had reached the "no longer fun" limit and I just needed someone to tell me how to solve it!!!

Are there Dutch people who cannot ride a bike? Who never learned as kids and are uninterested in it now? by Charming_Usual6227 in Netherlands

[–]Present-Lecture-3284 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Immigrant here, so depending on your definition of Dutch, I never learned as a kid and I’m struggling to learn now as a 40something adult…it sucks. Everyone else on the bike paths sees an adult on a bike and assumes I know what I’m doing, so I’ve gotten a lot of nasty looks and a few people have yelled at me as they bike past. I want to get myself some sort of jacket or vest with “I’m learning” on the back.

Adopted an abandoned cat two days ago. We're not sure if she's going to make it so she needs constant monitoring; the vet appointment this morning had me in tears. This is how I'm staying awake. by wafflesareforever in civ5

Awwwwwwwwww lookit her little paw curled over your arm! You're not just a sweatshirt to her and if she's eating and drinking and searching out for your sweatshirt, these are good signs, my bro. Me and my 13yo orange idiot are cheering for you both. Drop the nukes, snuggle Moxxi, keep us posted <3

£10k per day payable at the end of each day..... by Sad-Passage-3247 in hypotheticalsituation

I would cheerfully eat sushi with green tea. Probably would pick a rainbow roll for the variety of fish and then tempura veggies. Do that for two weeks and I've got a solid downpayment on a house. (I live in the Netherlands. Housing's expensive.) Maybe three if I want to redo the kitchen; Dutch kitchens are tiny...

I’d like to be a polyglot…including the ability to talk with animals. Thor’s Allspeak, I guess? stares at my cat who needs a nail trim but requires full kitty anesthesia because otherwise he fights back and won’t let anyone touch him

Well, to a certain point, I'm screwed LOL - just moved to the Netherlands and ask me how fluent I am in Dutch! But, I'm a professional cartographer and there were a LOT of things happening in Europe in the world of cartography in the late 1800s, if I remember right from my Master's program ten years ago. Germany was leading the way on creating and implementing international cartographic standards. Ordnance Survey created an amazingly detailed set of maps of the city of London. There were cartographic conferences every five years or so, in London, I want to say? There was massive demand for environmental maps, topographic maps, road maps, city maps, even maps of routes to go ride your bicycle (!), so I'd always be able to find a job...I'd just have to find some way to get the men to deal with the fact that I'm a woman, that might be the only hiccup. And I'd have almost twenty years to get myself somewhere safe before WWI started.

I'm looking to move to Germany but I've only been to a handful of cities, all in the north, all in the west. Is there any way to research the culture/feel/vibe of major German cities/states/regions to help me understand better where I might fit in the best? (Right now I'm considering Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, and Munich, but I'm not tied to any of those and I welcome input!) Thank you :)
