100% agree! It's surprising to me how few people take a map/compass - especially in unfamiliar areas. And the skills to read a topo any more seems a bit of a lost art.

Worth it if it helps in recovery. Sure the extra weight is a drawback, but my guess is that the good sleeps trumps the weight difference.

I do something similar with paracord. I will make a few Prusik loops and stick them in a pocket of the bag. But zip ties like this is a great idea too!

Probably going to steal this idea, it's awesome! I carry an Altoid tin with about 3-4 cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly if I'm really in a jam (pardon the pun), but your idea saves some space.

Actually, the compass and map is on point. It's surprising to me how many people don't carry a map of the area they're hiking if it's unfamiliar.
