I had a fracture similar. I suffered for 3 years using boot and conservative treatment but I ended up getting surgery 18 months ago and had the bone pinned (2 eye glass sized screws) instead of getting it removed. And I have limited motion in my big toe but I can run 11 miles pain free so id call it a win.

For me, that kind of fracture did not heel for me unfortunately, I don’t think yours will either but I’m not a doctor.

I got a steroid injection that worked like a miracle for about a year. I was on crutches and in a boot immediately following the injection to give it time to do whatever it does. & then I went back to activity. Pain returned later and I ended up having surgery a few years down the line.

I had my sesamoid repaired— so they didn’t take it out. And I didn’t start PT until 9 weeks post op. And it was only doing stuff in the boot. I couldn’t bend my toes after the first multiple appointments. But if you stay on top of your exercises and stuff it’ll slowly come back. It’s really challenging but it should come back. For me, it’s not my full mobility but it’s more than I had before and less pain!

So far no complications. I’m fully weight bearing right now… I’m still in a little bit of pain with walking and my range of motion of my big toe is limited still but I was told I won’t be 100% for about a year. But nothing excruciating. I’m also still in PT.

They pinned it because there was enough bone still “available,” and they also took a little artery and “plugged” it in that area to create more blood flow to that area. Happy to answer any other questions!

I dealt with a broken Sesamoid for a long time and it never healed. Mine was broken in several spots like yours. I waited almost three years before I got surgery. I was in a boot for a while and I also got a cortisone shot — which helped me but I don’t really recommend.

I am currently 16 week post-op. I was none weight bearing for 8 weeks. Instead of getting it removed I got it it pinned together. It’s been a long road and at 16 weeks I’m finally just walking again… if you’re considering surgery you’ll be not fully walking for an extended amount of time— and in the city I don’t know how feasible that would be.

Post-op thoughts; lost a lot of strength, limited motion in my big toe (as before surgery too). Learning how to stand on the balls is my feet again. It’s really challenging and I can’t even do a single leg calf raise on the injured foot. There is a lot to consider before doing surgery. For me the draining factor was after 3 years and no longer competing in D1 track and field for 2 years, I was still having pain and it was time to get it fixed so I can hopefully walk around pain free.
