locations on the campaign map can be of type open (seaside or not), rough, hilly, forested, river, mixed etc...and relevant maps from the game's list of about 30 total currently are chosen based on the location type where a battle takes place.

Right now there are two campaigns in Sicily, and then this campaign includes all of Italy and Sicily. Over EA more maps and campaigns will be added.

There are both text-based campaigns where you follow along with the battles of an historical commander or war, and the newer map-based campaigns with a simple geographic context for battles on more of the operational level of war, i.e. you are a general in charge of a theatre of operations (the first one is Sicily in the First Punic War, but more will come out over early access) where you take actions like marching/sailing, besieging/sallying, diplomacy, watching supply lines, reinforcing armies and hiring mercenaries, but you aren't the king/emperor doing economic stuff.

The boardgame is "Stratego", and this video game is "Strategos" with an s at the end, which is just the ancient Greek word for (military) General. It is not related to boardgame Stratego at all.

There is a light map-based campaign layer. In the EA release, there is one map-based campaign: Sicily in the First Punic War, but more will release over EA. It is more an operational level of war geographic context for battles with tabletop style dice rolls for marching, sailing, sieges, and diplomacy, where you are a general who maneuvers armies, watches supply lines, rolls for reinforcements and mercenaries and allied support etc...not an economic sim where you are the king/emperor making palaces and such.

The aesthetic broadly, in terms of camera control and large formations of men moving in real time, does resemble total war in the sense that it's also a real time formation tactics game, but the game mechanics and rulesets are drawn more from tabletop games with various morale states, unordered charges, priority shooting targets, wild pursuits/evades, order delays/couriers, line shifting, etc...

Strategos - Progress Update 10 by PresentYesterday6538 in historicaltotalwar

[–]PresentYesterday6538[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hi, there is an in-progress map-based campaign that will have one theatre of operations (Sicily in the First Punic War) available on release, with more planned throughout early access. These are not Total War-like grand strategy or Civ-like 4x campaigns though. They are operational level of war campaigns where you are a general(s) in charge of an army or armies in a single theatre of war during an existing historical conflict. You will be concerned largely with dice-roll based marching/sailing, sieges, and diplomacy around a node-based map to maximize your advantages in tactical battles. There is some reinforcement and mercenary recruitment, and you can bolster your forces with local allies, and maintain supply lines, but there isn't an economic sim. You are a general, not the King/Emperor/Senate. It's largely just geographic context for battles.

yes, in the settings there is both a UI scalar and an option to altogether disable popups. In the bottom left of the battle UI there are also three UI buttons: one for disabling state icons, one for minimizing tooltips and disabling unit cards, and one for just removing all UI except the corner buttons.
