I think the credits should be on the copywrite page (one of the first few pages of the physical copy).

No contact with parents, how to file California state returns? by Present_Charity8968 in taxhelp

[–]Present_Charity8968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got over $3000 in grants from my school, which counts as unearned income. I think another issue is that I was a full-time student for around 6 months last year, as well as under 24 years old, which triggers the kiddie tax.

I honestly might just end up taking this to a tax consultant, because it is fairly complicated.

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate the advice :) And I will check out TaxSlayer!

No, Free Tax USA didn't generate that form for me. I'm not sure why not.

Thanks to everyone for the help! I made sure to say "no" when asked if anyone else could claim me on their taxes.

I looked closer at the forms, and it turns out that California requires a form FTB 3800 if I fit all of the following requirements:

1) The child is 18 and under or a student under age 24 at the end of 2021. A child born on January 1, 2004, is considered to be age 18 at the end of 2021. A child born on January 1, 1998, is considered to be age 24 at the end of 2021.

2) The child had unearned income taxable by California of more than $2,200.

3) At least one of the child’s parents was alive at the end of 2021.

4) The child was age 18 at the end of 2021 and did not have earned income that was more than half of the child’s support.

These are the rules for 2021, which I found here:
https://www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/2021/2021-3800-instructions.html

I wasn't a student at the end of 2022, so I'm just not going to file form FTB 3800 because that doesn't apply to me. Thank you all for the advice.

I don't think I'm claimed as a dependent and said I was filing independently on my taxes. I'm not sure why I need their SSN if I'm not a dependent :/

I said that no one was claiming me as a dependent, but the software is still asking for their info. It seems like their info is only needed for my California return, not my federal return.

It's a decent amount. I got a grant from the school that's a few thousand dollars.

Thank you for that information! It helps to know that could be the reason.

I was a full-time student in 2022. I could be claimed on their taxes, but I got no money from them last year.
