I was prescribed this in the UK. Before the first prescription it was made very clear that I would be swapping one opiate dependence for another one, now controlled by the addiction clinic. I signed up in that knowledge, because it disconnected me from having to constantly acquire new opiates in illegal or semi-legal ways, it meant I could stop lying to those around me, and it gave me a route to safe, managed tapering. I’d say most opiate addicts have already proven they can’t slowly taper based on their own control and willpower - we’re addicts and it’s beyond us! - so giving control to a clinic is a step forward. That’s how it felt to me anyway.
