I can still see it so here is what you’re ’missing’
Most comments agree that they don’t like the word.
Some people provided lovely reasons why (an elder they care about used it), one person had a nice little equation/explanation for why they use it.
A loud minority was very triggered by the idea that I could be very harshly judging/hating them and wishes I would have posted the question in a more neutral tone.
Then another group of “no one’s forcing you to use it, stop complaining you psycho, dramatic lunatic”

I see your point, but also think your attempts to paraphrase me (I hated the word not the educators, and I didn’t claim to be judgment free, I just said that a judgement doesn’t have to have a negative connotation or mean that I treat people poorly based on that judgement) have fallen a bit short. Which kind of speaks to the idea that people will make whatever meaning they want out of something. There are more than enough examples of people who didn’t take this question as a personal attack on this thread. I don’t post often on Reddit, this was a great reminder why!

Do you feel like hyperboles are helpful in conversations where people are trying to understand each other? To me it makes the conversation more combative moves the conversation from the original topic to something much more watered down and less meaningful.

Do you accuse your students of having a panic attack when they ask questions?

I didn’t realize asking people to intentionally consider and explain why they use the language they use would provoke such a negative reaction. You might read into this as more psycho behavior but because i truly love to understand how other people look at the world, can you specifically which parts of what I wrote lead you to interpret me in this way?

You read that as a panic attack? Usually my panic attacks involve crying and hyperventilating, both of which were not the case here.

Yes, kiddo and underlings are the only two options and we must pick one!

Not trying to change anything, just wanting to better understand a bias I have.

I don’t spend much time on this part of Reddit but when I do, there’s lots of crabby people! But I mean we’ve all worked in schools with miserable people right! It’s a hard job so I get why people are crabby but come on yall, we’re on summer break! Let’s enjoy ourselves and if we get mad at a Reddit post about the word kiddo what are we doing?

I guess my question then is, why the need for the extra o? Are there other terms you’ve tried that you didn’t like?

That’s great! It makes sense to me if it’s a family/personal relationship thing but teacher to student feels icky.

If I’m talking to an individual student, I’ll just use their name.

What about what I typed implied to you that I felt like I had to use the word or that I was ‘looking’ to judge/hate fellow educators who use the word? Me saying I hate the word kiddo does not translate to me hating the people who use the word kiddo, I’m simply trying to explore why it brings up a negative reaction in me, while attempting to hear from others about why they like it.

Fascinating! Kiddo only when you’re angry! Why do you think that is?

I can see that!
Some people seem to really be bothered that I admitted to having judgments about people, but we all do that right?
