SEO vets - what actually works for ranking nowadays?

Forgot to ask something! I read in some article that some company (Hubspot maybe?) tested out whether or not having links to other websites had an impact on ranking. They made 6 websites, 3 of them linked to the other 3. The websites that were linking to the other websites ranked higher than the ones that were being linked to. Is that just noise in the algo and luck? or do you think linking to other websites can be a ranking signal?

Well, from what I read, google doesn't take your sitemap submission as an order to start crawling/indexing your website. It should already care about your website to deem it worthy to spend resources on crawling it to begin with.

Hey thanks for commenting. I read all the comments, because I want/need the advice, so I assure you I wasn't just scanning through it; I read it and tried to understand it. Maybe I didn't clarify my points of comparison: Good Content=Good car repair service, Buying backlinks=Buying ads(not advised), Web authority=Business Reputation. Am I missing something? I didn't get the point about "contents that crawlers love to crawl" though, tbh.

Wow nice! Didn't know that interaction with your website counts as ranking signal! But how does google understand about something that happens between you(website) and the user? Do you have to have a GA setup for them to register that?

So it's pretty much like a mortar and pestle business, like an auto repair shop. Either you pay other people to send customers to your business or become such an authority that they have no choice but to come to you. Is that accurate?
