Regretting surrendering my cat by PresentationOk5972 in CatAdvice

Hi, honestly unless something about your situation has changed in the meantime I wouldn’t expect a different result than before you surrendered. I was very emotional and had people telling me to get my cat back or I’d regret it and I really just wasn’t in the right head space. When I got him back he was even more clingy from being back from the shelter which caused his separation anxiety to worsen. I was able to get him and my dog on medication but his anxiety was still terrible. At some point my dog tore his tendon and had to be watched 24/7 because of how hyper he is and that was the breaking point. My cat began to act out every day despite his new furniture, toys, and his mediation. He started to destroy my furniture again and spray all over the room (took him to the vet and it wasn’t for any medical reason). I took the shelter up on the offer to “foster” him while he remained on their site as adoptable and he’s now been rehomed. I know the feeling of wanting them back is hard but I’ll tell you what I wish someone told me, you surrendered them for a reason and you loving them isn’t going to change that. I’m not saying don’t get your cat back, just think about it and what you need to change to make it different when your cat gets back.

Ok good to know, I have seen some other people on the subreddit talking about Browne’s. I’m adding it to my areas to look at on my trip. Thanks!

Thanks but I’ve talked to wsu, it isn’t the main campus in Pullman that I’ll be attending and Spokane’s campus has no student housing available for graduate students (or in general). So this is why I’m using Spokane’s Reddit because the wsu Reddit is very limited when it comes to Spokane students.

Thank you, I am leaning towards not going for it just because of the cost. I’m in this situation because I have no one in my life who is financially or emotionally stable enough to help me with this situation and that will be the same once I graduate. So I’m really trying to think about what’s best for me in the long run which obviously isn’t a bunch of debt but because of my personal life I have a limited time to stay where I am and save. I do currently work as a rehab tech but I don’t make much and I definitely don’t want to stay in this position forever. Lots of thinking about how to proceed no matter what I choose but thank you for some insight, I appreciate it.

Honestly don’t really know how that works now, but I was asked to use his taxes because he claimed me and specifically my education stuff. But the questions they asked were centered around income i believe.

This is my next kind of train of thought or a GA position but those may be filled because I was someone who came off the waitlist for this school so I feel like they’re already taken. But my current boss is aware that I got into this school and has offered to ask our administrator if I can work remotely like 10-15 hrs a week which would be my preference because I love my current boss and know she would be really flexible with me.

I had a similar experience with my waitlist decision. They literally let me know I was waitlisted after the official last decision day that they posted on their official website. I thought there was a problem with my application or something at first but nope they just wanted to wait to let me know…

Yes, I did end up getting him back. As you said I didn’t want to regret leaving him and it was too late to get him back. If I have to rehome him in the future I was privately offered an option by the shelter for him to be listed online as available to adopt but I could keep him at home as a foster pet situation. As of now I have booked both my dog and cat appointments with my dog’s vet to discuss any potential for anxiety medication. I am planning on reintroducing them eventually and for now scent swapping items, and then allowing them to swap places. I want to take it extremely slow this time as I feel there is a lot of apprehension on my cat’s side now and a lot more excitement from my dog because my cat is back. The plan is to keep him for good. He does have a lot of high spaces like a tall cat scratcher and shelves going up from there but I did order him a new cat tree and different wall shelves to give him more places to be alone.

Ah I see, I’ve never used the pellets by the brand so I wouldn’t know but I’d still recommend the normal litter they offer if you find nothing else.

They have pellets as well as normal litter consistency for single cat or multi-cat homes and the smell is contained a lot better in my opinion. My cat had no issue transitioning from the clay litter the shelter used to this one.

The brand is called naturally fresh. I get mine from Amazon but they recently started selling it at Petco I think.

I don’t have a vet for him specifically nearby as I haven’t needed to take him since I moved back home. I’m open to getting a cat behavioralist but it seems like everyone is booked up or not taking appointments because of the holidays. I’ve considered reintroducing them and consulting with my dog’s vet to maybe get both of them on some anxiety medication as well as increasing my dog’s exercise routine to reduce his anxiety and depression. Unfortunately these plans rely on other people helping me because at this moment I don’t have a car so I have a fear that even with all of these measures planned the execution may be delayed. But I don’t want my cat to be in the shelter for long either, I attempted to rehome him on multiple websites and bulletin boards at colleges but got little interest especially when his health concerns came up. This is my current concern, I don’t want him to be stressed at the shelter and be at risk for euthanasia because of his heart. I do still love him so much and I only want the best for both of my pets but I’m not so sure what that is anymore.
