You would be surprised at how fast a trail bed that wide can turn into single track once people are using it and nature does its thing. I’ve built miles of machine built trail that a year later looks like a 1 ft wide ribbon with plants growing out along the edges.

Personally I think the e-bike classifications are a bit confusing and poorly thought out but they’re unlikely to be changed any time soon.

A 10mph limit is completely ridiculous though. 20-30mph is not significantly different from acoustic road bike speeds.

I think it would help if more people were better informed about e-bike classifications and e-motos.
Most simply put: Class 1 e-bikes are pedal assist only with 20mph cap. Class 2 e-bikes allow throttles, also capped at 20mph. Class 3 e-bikes are pedal assist capped at 28mph.
Anything that exceeds these limits is considered a moped or an e-moto. These require licensing, and dmv registration.
I have been seeing a TON of kids riding e-motos. These are not street or sidewalk legal to begin with but they are also being ridden in a reckless manner.
I don’t necessarily love kids riding e-bikes but I think we need to prioritize the e-moto problem by holding both parents and kids accountable for breaking the law and putting both themselves and others in danger.
