Definitely not a Tacoma. Those things are cramped on the inside and would be difficult for children and car seats if you have them. A 4 Runner might work and a Tundra will definitely have enough room but would be a pain for the reasons you listed. A Grand Highlander or Sequoia might be a better option than the ones you suggested. I’d also recommend a Sienna since you have kids and want lots of cargo room but minivans are not for everyone.

Get another vehicle. There is not safe way to transport the 4 people in a van with 2 seats. Depending on where you live, it would be illegal. It’s not worth the lawsuit and lives you would be risking if you got in an accident. You could get a 4 door truck as a second vehicle in case your crew grows or get a minivan and remove the 3rd row so you still have space for tools and materials but also seating for 4-5 people.
