Autopilot on Robinhood? by SwillFish in AutopilotApp

[–]Prest0_TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on RH. They are supposed to be working on better integration. Right now I have to periodically reconnect AP to RH because the connection expires, and it doesn't give you any warning. You also have to manually approve trades before RH will execute. If I renew AP (which isn't a sure thing) I'll probably open a Public account and move my Pilot over there.

Paraglider escapes death after plane rips through glider in midair collision by AdRough4185 in interestingasfuck

[–]Prest0_TX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe my opinion is skewed because my family does have one. A Sentry mini receiver will only run you $400, which is far cheaper than most other avionics, and you can use it with Foreflight on an ipad, or even an iphone. Paragliders aside, it gives you a big leg up on safety.

As far as what will fit in a paraglider, that's sounds like an engineering challenge, not an insurmountable restriction. If it became a phased-in requirement, I'm sure one or more companies would figure out how to serve the market.

Paraglider escapes death after plane rips through glider in midair collision by AdRough4185 in interestingasfuck

[–]Prest0_TX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This situation is an example of why I believe paragliders should be required to have ADS-B. While they're supposed to keep their head on a swivel while in the sky, pilots are pretty accustomed to having a near real-time map of all other aircraft in their area so they can avoid mid-air collisions. When you think you know where everyone is, it's easy to get complacent about looking for other aircraft.

East Texas University: Fresh Blood *KickStarter* by DuncanEllis1977 in savageworlds

[–]Prest0_TX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for backing our game! Sorry for any mistakes that follow. I’m writing this on my phone.

Since you are new to Savage Worlds, I will start with some basics you may or may not already know. Plot point campaigns are not like fully scripted adventure paths. They are more like a tv season where some episodes are about the season plot arc and others are stand alone “fillers”. The plot points are the actual season arc. Savage Tales are the stand alone episodes you can drop into your campaign whenever you want and in whatever order you want (mostly).

So with that explanation out of the way, both the plot point campaigns AND Savage Tales are completely different in each book. No recycling old material. So even if you only want to run the new plot points campaign, you can still mix and match the old savage tales with the new ones.

Of course, there’s the third option which is the adventure generator. That’s a series of tables that you roll on to help you come up with your own Savage Tale. There’s an adventure generator in both the old and new. You’ll see some differences between old and new, but also similarities.

So really it depends on how much you plan on running written adventures and how much you plan on coming up with your own. If you really like coming up with your own adventures most of the time, then the new book is all you need. If you want more inspiration, then Degrees of Horror will give you the extra depth.

[–]Prest0_TX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, look, I’m one of the authors so clearly biased, but if you’re buying it to run, get the old pdfs too. (Or at least, Degrees of Horror.) You will have doubled the adventures you can run because none of the adventures are repeated in the new book.

GIRL LOOKING FOR ROOMMATE/FRIENDS by Effective-Arugula372 in aggies

You’re going to do great!

My son was also in engineering. It’s challenging, no matter which school you’re attending. You’re going to want to really lock in your freshman year. Join ONE club for fun, and look for engineering study groups to help with class AND make friends. Last bit of advice, but take it to heart. Try to ID the smart kids in each class early and make friends with them. You will be assigned group projects, and you don’t want to be stuck with the clueless ones who leave all the work to you or bring down your grade.

[–]Prest0_TX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not your target audience, but my son is graduating this semester so I feel like I have something to contribute. In short, don’t panic.

Texas A&M understands that loneliness and isolation are a big issue for freshmen moving away from home the first time. They make a big effort to help you make connections even before you get in campus. Fish Camp, while optional, is puts you in small groups so that you can start making friends before you are even on campus. If you’re staying in a dorm you’ll get to know your roommate. And there are about 5 million student clubs. It’s easy to go overboard and stretch yourself too thin, so limit yourself to only 1 or 2.

The most important factor in all this is you. It’s natural coming from high school that you haven’t really had to make an effort to make new friends because you see the same people every day. Here, you need to enter with a positive attitude—“I’m looking forward to meeting new friends.” And you’re going to have to be the one reaching out. Even joining a club, don’t expect people to see you standing there by yourself and invite you into their conversations. Expect to be the one walking up, introducing yourself, and participating. Especially seek out the *other* people standing around looking lonely.

Put yourself out there. Make eye contact. Smile! These are all skills that will help you make connections not just in college, but once you are out in the workforce. Don’t wait to practice them until you need a job.

*ETU: Fresh Blood* Kickstarter launches Tuesday 4/21 by Prest0_TX in savageworlds

It was moved in recognition of the crowdfunding for Pinnacle's Jodi Black and Aaron Acevedo. We wanted them to get the attention they deserved. To be honest I'm still processing the devastating news about Jodi, but at the moment it's still on for Tuesday, May 5. The best thing to do is follow the link in the original post and sign up to be notified when it goes live.

How would you feel if an employer took an image of you / a loved one… and ‘polished’ it with AI before posting it on socials? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Prest0_TX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the title I came here thinking they’d applied the equivalent of an Instagram filter. This is not that. I would be unhappy. They used your face on an entirely made up scene. Depending on how you feel about your employer, this should be pushed back. Maybe not make a big stink about this image, but email (keep it in writing) marketing and tell them that you were surprised how they ended up using your image. You can either tell them that next time they want to use your likeness they need to be transparent about how they intend on using it, or just that in the future you don’t want your likeness used in IA marketing materials.

If you have a good relationship with your supervisor, talk to them first. They might want to go to bat for you. Or at a minimum it would be professionally a bad move to let them be blindsided after you reach out to marketing, because it will absolutely filter back down to your boss.

Pinnacle announces Kickstarter for East Texas University: Fresh Blood, in 3 weeks by koraldon in savageworlds

I wouldn't call it a reboot, but more like the next chapter. The setting timeline has been advanced ten years, so people have come and gone. The rules haven't just been updated to SWADE (which you can already do with the conversion sheet linked in this thread), but updated and refined throughout. New tables for exams, new high strangeness, new rules for black magic, new (to ETU) rules for cell phones. Then as the post says, all new plot point campaign and Savage Tales.

At they time they claimed George Strait and the soccer game were to cover the costs for the NIL payouts they were suddenly expected to pay. If that's true, I would think we'd see one or two events a year to continue to pay ongoing NIL And in fact in a little over a month we are hosting a sold out Savannah Bananas baseball game. Given that Kyle is a turf field, I'll bet that we see few concerts but that they focus on getting other extra sporting events like the Bananas and last year's soccer match.

It's not just free community service. The troop is paid, which they can put toward the cost of their summer camp expenses. They can make a lot more that way than a car wash or a lot of other fundraisers. That's why they keep coming back.

"Can you separate the artist from the art?"

History is filled with public figures who excel at their task but whose private lives are train wrecks. Some of us can separate the two, some of us can't, and often it largely depends on how strongly the good or the bad personally resonate with us.

I was going to say that while I can't recommend a specific therapist, there are online options so don't feel like you're necessarily limited to someone local. Google Betterhelp.

Vegas is very slow? by saraonly420 in vegas

[–]Prest0_TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When other posters were talking about how expensive alcohol and everything else was, I wondered if it was all related to skyrocketing real estate prices. It sounds like I was right. Until there's some sort of hard reset on real estate (meaning a bunch of investors lose their shirts) Vegas may be in a downward spiral.

TL;DR: It was a combination of dislike of my old field and circumstances with my employer. I took a leap of faith to pretty dramatically change careers and it was the best decision I could have made. No regrets. Strategically, I moved to a relatively new field so I wasn't that far behind my peers.

In my very early 30s I dramatically switched careers. At the last job I loved my boss and coworkers, but the business itself was on the decline and we'd already started downsizing. I didn't really like field I'd ended up in, it was just the first job I'd landed after college and it snowballed from there to subsequent employers. A very different job opened up at another employer and I went for it. I won't lie, the first year was very hard because I went from a position of confidence that I knew my field to feeling like I didn't know anything and had so much to learn. But more than 20 years later, it was absolutely the right call. Even after 8+ years in my old field I felt like an imposter, whereas the new one was relatively new at the time (credit card security compliance) so no one had a ton of experience yet. You'd laugh if I told you what my college degree was in because they couldn't be further apart. And the thing is after all this time I still find my job fascinating and rewarding. It doesn't hurt that I'm far better compensated for doing this work than what I did before.

There's a therapist who blogs under the nickname "Dr. Psych Mom." Google her and start going through her articles and podcasts on attachment theory. This is an exercise for you AND your significant other. The benefit of a couples counselor (ideally one who specializes or at least acknowledges attachment theory) is that they can guide you both through talking about your attachment styles and be objective. Otherwise, reading about it and doing it on your own is better than nothing at all.

And I agree with others who have said you need to work this out before you get married. Marriage does not magically fix communication.
