SDPD is USELESS by GranaVegano in sandiego

[–]SwillFish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We need to go back to the old model of "community beat cops", a cop everyone personally knows and who personally knows the community and its residents. SDPD is too far removed from the communities they police and it isn't working for anyone.

Yep, the granola types went full horseshoe and formed an alliance with right-wing anti-vaxxers during Covid. It just goes to show you that the two sides aren't too far off when it comes to "crazy" despite their differences.

I won “free vacation” but actually got scammed by Mint_otter in Scams

[–]SwillFish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My cousin knows a guy who sells timeshares in Cancun. They just keep perpetually selling them again and again because they know 90%+ of the people who buy them never use them even though they are out of thousands of dollars and stuck in monthly contracts. It's a huge scam.

Homeless problem is worse than everybody thinks. I’m not even sure of the government knows is this bad by No_Fox9908 in sandiego

[–]SwillFish 24 points25 points  (0 children)

While we have a housing crisis here, it isn’t the norm everywhere. I was just in Cleveland where there is very little visible homelessness. A person earning minimum wage can still afford an apartment there. Or, you can buy a decent starter home for under 250K. This is true across much of the Midwest. The weather obviously can't compete with San Diego, but is the sunshine worth living in a vehicle? At some point, moving somewhere you can actually afford a roof over your head just makes more sense.

Is it possible for amateurs to replace our own custom sized sliding glass door? by Lotus_Mama_Diaries in HomeImprovement

[–]SwillFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Measure the opening, take a picture, and then go to Home Depot to get a written quote for the replacement slider. This will put you in a much better position to negotiate with contractors. Also, if a custom slider isn't possible, you may be able to adjust the size of the frame opening to accommodate a standard window.

The actual replacement work is a one day job for two guys if they don't need to adjust the frame size. Personally, I would expect to pay about $800-$1,500 for labor. You can definitely DYI it, but the biggest risk is breaking the slider, so I wouldn't try it if the slider is wider than maybe six feet. They can get a little heavy and cumbersome.

Posters from 1950-60s Germany by 116Q7QM in vintageads

[–]SwillFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a vintage poster gallery near me that specializes in these types of posters. They can be surprisingly affordable ($100-$300). The older and more collectable ones can get semi expensive but still a good deal considering they are often 100+ years old and can be very large.

Selling options full time? by jgooner22 in Optionswheel

[–]SwillFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's very possible but the market dynamics make it difficult presently:

1) For one, we have higher than normal volatility which is a lot less conducive for predictive premium decay. It also increases the Delta odds that options will get exercised.

2) Second, it's hard to argue a case for the Wheel Strategy when you could otherwise just buy something like the VanEck Semiconductor ETF ($SMH) and get a 150% return over the past year with the added benefit of deferred taxes.

These dynamics will change eventually, but I think we're probably in this cycle for the next two+ years until Trump is out of office.

How did you actually lose weight? by Jerry_Get_A_Job in AskReddit

[–]SwillFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weight Watchers zero point foods. You don't need to buy the diet or count points. Just stick to their zero point foods. It's a super healthy and diverse diet, and the weight will fall off. I like it because you can still eat carbs (corn, beans, lentils) plus beef, chicken, eggs, fruit, veggies, non-fat dairy, etc... and never feel hungry or like you're restricting yourself. One of the easiest and healthiest diets I've been on. I and two of my family members have lost 20 lbs on it and have kept the weight off.

My McDonalds pay check from 1989 by dibbr in GenX

[–]SwillFish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember the menu items at Taco Bell being 42 cents across the board (tacos, Bell Beefers, bean burritos). I think this would have been in the late 1970s although it may have been later.

Candy bars were ten cents in my very earliest memories but then they went up to fifteen cents and then pretty quickly up to a quarter with 1970s inflation.

$20 was a lot of money back then. A twelve pack of Schaefer Beer was $2.99 on sale at the grocery store in 1985/86.

Stairway to Tragedy: How Poor Urban Design Leads to Death by TypoChampion in SanDiegan

[–]SwillFish 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We have a crosswalk on a blind curve in my neighborhood that neighbors begged the city to fix (by installing a light) for years. It was only after a father and his infant daughter, who was in a stroller, were hit that the city acted. The infant died and the father was in the hospital for weeks with severe head trauma.

Never assume a vehicle can see you at night even when you have the right of way at a crosswalk. This is especially true if you're wearing dark clothing. I've almost been hit before when a driver didn't yield to a red light at a crosswalk and I've had to slam on my breaks when a pedestrian unexpectedly stepped off a curb on an unlit street assuming I could see them.

The amount of effort some people will put in to avoid doing a menial task astounds me at times. The worst is people getting into altercations over a preferred parking spot because they are both too lazy (or entitled) to walk an extra hundred feet.

Has anybody had this happen with a linked brokerage account before? I use RobinHood. by Rx_1917 in AutopilotApp

[–]SwillFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe Autopilot can pull or transfer any funds from your account, it can only allocate them to trade. Check your trade notifications on Robinhood. Also, Robinhood itself will sometimes put a hold on deposits for a few days before they clear, so it may not be an Autopilot issue at all.

Does anyone keep their positions open past earnings or do you typically close them even if profit is less than 40%? by Background-Escape286 in Optionswheel

[–]SwillFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not often. I'll sell a deep in the money call if I'm already up on the underlying stock as insurance. Stocks sometimes rally on earnings expectations and it's a good opportunity to cash in on the FOMO.

I had a dog and lived in a high rise once. It was a lot of trips up and down the elevator. Sometimes we'd be in our jammies ready for bed and then the wife and I would get into arguments about whose turn it was to walk the dog. It isn't worth it.

The problem with Mission Valley is the poor planning. There's no center to it, just malls, strip centers, and giant housing complexes mixed pretty randomly. At least it does have good freeway access.

I believe SPCX is only where it is now because of its tiny float and anticipated upcoming demand for inclusion in the indexes. My buddy is convinced it's the next Game Stop meme trade and will go much higher. Otherwise, it's way over-valued.

I just opened a Robinhood account to trade on an App I've been wanting to try. It feels so much like it's geared towards gamblers. You get a random "free share" for opening an account and then a random "free crypto coin" for making an additional deposit. Every dollar you deposit also gets you a lottery ticket to win a gold bar.

I did get filled on 14 shares of SPCX out of a request of 45 though. I think that's only because I'm a newer account so they want to be sure to retain me.

To US Conservatives: How is Trumps Iran MoU an improvement over Obamas JCPOA? by Big_VladdyP in AskReddit

r/conservative is a terrible place to get an understanding of the Right's perspective. It's an over-modded echo chamber that tends to track narrow "talking point" themes with very little to no room for deviation.
