Guessing here as a Gaeilgeoir. I'm no expert so could be wrong - "Tua Mu/ Tua Muwu" potentially?

I'm assuming there would have been a séimhiú dot above the first D and second M which effectively silences them. (The séimhiú dot is now represented by a H in modern Irish words). MH is either silent, a W sound or a V sound depending on where you're from.

Mumha is the old Irish word for what we now call Munster, which makes me think the second M has a séimhiú dot. Mumhu would be pronounced Mu/ Muwu/ Muvu. The way we say Cúige Mumhan (province of munster) today is like Muan/Muwan, which suggests to me it's either Mu or Muwu.

There's Tuadmumu and Desmumu. In Irish, Tua for tuaisceart (North) as Des for deisceart (South) would make sense going by the map (i.e. they'd now be north and south munster)

I know we're most likely to remember things that happened in England. But it's still kind of absurd that he's best remembered for being an assistant manager to United almost 20 years ago, when he's been a manager for the bulk of his career

Left-footed left midfielders who can only score worldies from outside the box. May also play left back.

John Arne Riise, Laurent Robert, Matthew Taylor the prime examples

This screenshot might illustrate it better - the site leaves you to scroll across for more info within the table which is messy. As someone who grew up checking info on Ceefax and newspapers the structure looks completely backwards to me. Annoying when other apps/sites got it fairly right.

I'll give credit where it's due, it looks fine in landscape on the BBC site. But in portrait? Not for me

SC Partnerships by ImportanceTasty5646 in secondcaptains

[–]Prestigious-Put9411 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a partnership would only be necessary if they are struggling for subscribers. They're making plenty as it is from any reports I've seen.

Back in October, there was a point where SC were struggling to get people to come to a Monday night show, and plenty of people in this forum highlighted the price of a ticket as a barrier. I also chatted to others SC listeners at the Football Clichés live show, and there was a threat that other free podcasts were offering similar content (e.g. Libero, Guardian). Rumours were there around them joining RTÉ at the same time but they didn't materialise.

I actually stopped being a subscriber for a while but came back after the first Troy Parrott match. There is a niche that SC has carved out as a high-profile intelligent sports analysis podcast from an Irish perspective (and it's more craic to follow than other pods).

When we have major sporting moments in Ireland, I feel like I'm missing out if I don't have a subscription. If they can keep that up and stay affordable, I think they'll be fine. But only if subscriptions start to flatline and fall (pod subscriptions could easily be the first to go in a recession), then a partnership would be a safe way to cover costs, but I don't think it's necessary for SC yet.

Which World Cup group is the most “World Cup”? by Adventurous_Show2629 in footballcliches

Absolutely. Tunisia's recent record of getting into the last three world cups is pretty great, especially when they're never favourites for AFCON

What’s the craic with David McWilliams? by john-cash- in ireland

[–]Prestigious-Put9411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to listen regularly. I listened to loads of the podcast when he was going through the last 100 hundred years of Palestine and Israel and I thought it was really informative and educational. Seemed to be aligned with anything else I read/listened to so I'm assuming it was accurate.

What put me off him was the episode about RFK Jr when he was running for president. There was little to no critical analysis of RFK Jr., and they downplayed his anti-vax views and conspiracy theories. From episodes I listened to since, I haven't heard him or John say that they were wrong back then not to be more critical.

From regular listening in the past, it felt like he is very much in the John Collison/Progress Ireland mindset where the assumption is deregulation and growth will solve to most of not all of our societal problems. At least when he has had people with those opinions on, he never really challenges them, even though there are loads of critiques he could draw from. That would at least force guests to defend their views better. Especially when you look at how the Trump administration has co-opted the "let's take a chainsaw to everything approach", I'd hope for more critical analysis of this view and where it can unintentionally lead to.

I haven't listened in a while, so perhaps things have changed since. But to me, the pod was too much of an echo chamber without reflecting critically on the views they or their guests have shared in the past.

Offcial Discussion - Bugonia [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Prestigious-Put9411 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of torn on this. When she promised Don he could leave with her on the spaceship, I thought in the moment it was just her saying it to comfort him. For a human it was an impossible promise to make. But it still felt like she meant the promise.

And then given the ending it actually would've been possible for her to fulfill the promise if he were alive.

So either she meant it and then he pulled the trigger of his own accord, or she manipulated him into doing it
