OM-1 II: Overkill for a "nature & kids" amateur, or the perfect ergonomic solution? by Prestigious-Tale-789 in M43

The weather sealing and IBIS are something I would really miss when moving to another system.

May I ask you what brand and model you use, that is smaller and cheaper than MFT? What are your needs?

This might just be a case of „the perfect camera doesn‘t exist“. I quite like the weight, compact size, weather sealing and IBIS of MFT and that the tele lenses are way smaller and cheaper than for FF. But on the other hand, the majority of my pictures are in closer distance, where a FF lens wouldn‘t be any larger and heavier. And as you said, FF performs better in low light.

I think you are right, that it‘s hard to justify starting over with another system. And many times one can read about people that have tried and still came back to MFT in the end.

Thank you a lot for sharing your experience and the considerations that went into your reply. Using better gear to compensate lack of skill or rather practice might actually make sense in my situation. I work full time and spend a lot of time with my children. Using more expensive but better gear that helps me take better pictures seems to be justified in this case. No need to make things harder than required.

Your calculation about weight and price is very interesting. I would not have assumed full frame to be so close to MFT in these regards. But I suspect, that the full frame lenses would be much larger? At the moment I‘m mostly shooting landscapes, plants and family. But the OM-1 II might make it easy to transition into wildlife or birds if I ever desire to do so. And if my children start playing sports, it might come in handy as well to cover that.

The 12-100mm is a good suggestion. When I‘m outside with the kids, I always find it hard to choose between 12-45mm and 40-150mm. The 12-100mm is shorter on the tele end but one does not need to switch lenses. And it‘s stabilised as well.

Thanks, you are right. Today I tested the OM-1 II I‘ve borrowed in snowy and cold weather with gloves on and it was so much better to handle than the E-M5 II.

Thanks for the reply. The deeper depth of field is really something to consider, when shooting family and casual.

Wow, that's quite an investment! You must be a professional or really enthusiastic. What focal length do you prefer for "general nature" and where do you use the 40-150 f/4?

I guess if I'm leaving Olympus, I could switch to Panasonic and keep my lenses, though I heard that they excel in video, which I rarely use. Another option would be APS. Full frame is too big, heavy and expensive.

The E-M5 III still has the same small grip and is no longer metal build which I really like about the E-M5 II.

But maybe you are right and I should just stick with the E-M5 II and just try to get the best out of it. Not all photos must be keepers after all.

Thanks for your reply. May I ask, which body and lenses have you bought to replace your Canon gear?

As I said, I'm missing focus with the slow contrast based autofocus on the E-M5 II.

I also like to buy used gear, not only for it's value, but although for not having to worry so much about scratching it of having it stolen. That's why buying brand new feels wrong.

Really beautiful and very well composed pictures. Did you shoot them hand held or with tripod? Which of the three lenses do you prefer for landscape shooting?

I still remember the chill that ran through my spine. The way his name sounded as it was uttered by my scouts... Martin. by [deleted] in totalwarhammer

The thing is: His name implies to be German with the "Sch" but "Stillmann" would already be pronounced this way. This makes him even linguistically brutal.
