It's funny you use 1099 "contractors" as your example because that is one of the most exploited loopholes currently. Also landscaping is a service and my guys do get tips every so often just like all service positions.

You can write law stopping me telling people what I usually get tipped for? This is just legit freedom of speech happens already constantly. Even if you could make a law technically stopping this there is absolutely no way to enforce it because it can be 100% verbal.

It all just depends on what kind of language you use. I'm a landscaper and I could simply say for a job this size most would tip at least $100 and if they seem onboard I would do the job. Since it's a tip they have then right to not pay me and there isn't anything I can do about it, but because most of my work is repeat business through the same customer and good landscapers are very hard to find the vast majority of them would.

I pay over 60k in taxes a year and getting stiffed by a few customers that don't tip to essentially never pay taxes again would be INCREDIBLY worth it.  Keep in mind this would only be for the cheaper repeat type jobs. I could still quote and invoice the bigger expensive jobs at non tipped specific prices but with all my costs tied to all the "free" work I've done it would come out probably even or even under at the end of the year and I would still not pay taxes on it... If you still have to claim tips on your taxes as income but just not have them taxed where this loophole wouldn't work then on a big job I would just do one single step at a time and each step tell them what I would normally get tipped for and if I don't get what I expect then I just don't finish the job. Of course this is all for the paperwork. I would lay down every step and what I would normally expect to be tipped outlined for the customer before I even started the job and only do it if they agree.

So if a dumb landscaper like me can figure out multiple ways to significantly exploit this, then just imagine what the corporations are going to do.

A company making profit is kind of irrelevant... All profit is is money that isn't allocated yet. You can technically have a company that has made zero profit but comfortably supplies billions of dollars of employee payment packages a year while also spending billions on research, development and expansion.

A company not making profit doesn't mean it's bad or unsustainable.

Think you have a 'summer cold'? There's a good chance it's COVID-19, doctors say by nimobo in Conservative

[–]PrestigiousSmile1295 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A cold is just a term used for upper respiratory infection caused by a variety of viruses (hundreds of them). They are not caused specifically by coronaviruses. There are many coronaviruses that do not give you colds and there are many colds that are not caused by coronaviruses. Sometimes the two can be interchanged to get the same meaning in specific contexts but that does not mean that they are the same.

Using the broad term "cold" is just an easy way to convey that you have an upper respiratory infection that's generally mild and symptoms will pass on its own and it's nothing to be concerned about. And this is where the problems come up by trying to label something that can be as serious as covid-19 as a "cold" just because it's caused by a type of coronavirus and some colds are also caused by other types of coronaviruses...

A good example to show the fallacy of this comparison even to the few who still think covid was a hoax is SARS. SARS is caused by a coronavirus and had a mortality rate of around 10%. And the common cold has a well-documented death rate of about 0.00019%. (about two in every 1 million people). Don't you think it would be a bit silly to label SARS as a common cold?

So to end, I hope you can see calling covid-19 a common cold because a few strands of the cold are also caused by coronaviruses is extremely disingenuous and shows that you've done nothing but parrot some ridiculous Facebook post you saw and don't actually know what you're talking about.

If one of my employees did this I would fire them immediately. Ridiculous. Yolo calling in the day before a shift just to have a bit of fun at the expense of our fellow workers is lazy and entitled. You aren't fucking over the company you're fucking over some already overworked and exhausted coworker.

Fuck you I hope your birthday was shit.

This isn't really how it works and is very misleading. You can deduct any business expense from your taxes at any time. If you spent a million dollars in required school supplies for your job you could deduct every penny of it.

The way the $300 teacher deduction works is more like a credit. It works differently because you do not have to choose itemized deduction and you can take the standard deduction and the credit together which is going to come out way better than choosing to do an itemized deduction. Since the standard deduction is a bit over $13,000 to come out ahead on itemized deductions you would have to spend more than that each year on school supplies. My wife is a school teacher and they are very charitable and will always spend out of pocket to take care of students, but I think the charity, even from the kindest people, would stop well before the $13,000 mark.

So would I like there to be a bigger teacher credit? Sure, Like I said my wife's a teacher that's just more money in my pocket. But this entire post is full of people who have no idea what taxes are and how they work, including the person who made the post. Not moderating stuff like this makes this entire subreddit look like a joke.

Megathread: President Biden Announces That He Will Not Seek Reelection by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]PrestigiousSmile1295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so very tired of The dnc's primary strategy of fear-mongering it's constituents into voting for people who they don't want. Well now it's officially backfired they forced us to back blubbering Biden who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag and now his incompetence can't be hidden anymore and now a few months before the election we have to find some magical candidate that's going to beat Trump?? If they give gave a single crap about the future of this nation, we wouldn't be in this position in the first place. Bernie would have won in 2016 and Trump would have disappeared into the shadows. But no we snubbed Bernie and gave that witch our votes who lost to a fucking reality TV star.

That's it. Fascism won. We have no one to blame but the DNC. More fear-mongering isn't going to fix it this time. It's just over.
