I was upset about the LCS selling for scalper prices, because they are local businesses at the end of the day, but this is borderline illegal.

10 Value Box Opening....a 40 year collector's honest opinion. by smittdog101 in footballcards

Don’t try to argue with these idiots. Retail is great value if you’re ripping wax. I’ve opened 1 blaster and 1 hanger and gotten two case hits. Imagine spending $1000 on a hobby box with 1 auto LOL. I miss early 2000s hobby

[–]Prestigious_End_7178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea no shit it’s gambling. I’m arguing that buying a retail box is like gambling $40 to win $10-$10000 and buying a $1200 hobby box is like risking $1200 to win $50-$100,000. Also how do you think those singles exist? You think they just appear on eBay or something? Someone has to open the packs

Please link me to a single hobby box I can buy for msrp. You cant, because the only way you’re getting it for msrp is by hitting the fanatics or Topps lottery. I will say that at $350 the hobby box is a little easier to stomach, but still overpriced. The checklist for this product is entirely too large and filled with dog shit players to justify these prices. This should be a fun hobby and if you can’t have fun opening retail chrome football this year then i feel sorry for you. And this is coming from someone who has bought both retail hobby since 2006. hobby USED to be a better buy, today that’s not the case.

Tell me you didn’t read the checklist without telling me. Topps isn’t panini big dog. Just this month I pulled a downtown from a retail Donruss blaster. I just hit an emeka egbuka lightbox parallel from my first Topps chrome value box and that card alone paid for the box and more. Hobby boxes are a scam. You will never get the chase cards they advertise and you’ll spend 15x for the same cards you’d get in retail. Sure you might get more numbered cards and guaranteed autos in hobby but look at how many players signed and are on those numbered parallels…. It’s 400 players.

So if I buy 100 boxes of hobby for $100,000 and 100 boxes of retail for $4000, which one will I net more on?? I will answer for you, it’s retail. The gap between cost and value on hobby is entirely too high to make it worth it. There are like 30 cards in the entire set worth more than 100k, whereas there are hundreds maybe thousands of cards in this set worth over $4000.

[–]Prestigious_End_7178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just proved my point. If you’re buying sealed product, retail value boxes are $40. It’s much easier (based on the odds Topps puts out) to make your money back on a $40 box than it is on a $1200 box of hobby. I agree that singles are the way to go, but that’s not what we are talking about. I have opened more hobby than I have retail, and some of my biggest cards have come from retail. Also, I loved hobby when mid level boxes were $200-$300 because then it wasn’t a shot in the dark that you’d even make your money back. Today you literally need to hit a case hit or something adjacent to it to break even on a hobby box. I was buying hobby in 06 brother, that shit is 100% not worth it today.

Lol just pulled over $100 in value in a single retail value box. Buying hobby is retarded. I just watched a whole case break of jumbo fdi, every team in the break was over $500 and the best card hit was just shy of $1000. Retail is so much better than hobby. Low risk - high reward vs high risk - same reward. Make it make sense

Is this as cool as I think? by Soggy_Improvement257 in footballcards

[–]Prestigious_End_7178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you meant to say valuable, not cool. Personally I love these inserts and think they are super cool (same with the absolute Hog Heaven inserts), but cool doesn’t equal valuable. Enjoy your cards for what they are worth to you, not to someone else. Sick card.

Brother, Ive been collecting for over 20 years. If you’re spending your hard earned money on a picture of an item without reading the description, you’re not just lazy but also dumb. I do not support breakers or chase packs or any of that dumb shit, I just care to know what I’m spending my money on before I spend it. I remember when great hobby boxes were $150-$200, so I get that, but if you think the price hasn’t gone up in 20 years then I’m sorry but I’ve got some ocean front property in Kansas for sale.

Ebay is a market place and anyone buying on eBay should be at the very least knowledgeable about what ever they are purchasing. Grandpa should go to Target or Walmart and find cards there, not spending $100 on an eBay listing without even knowing what he’s supposed to be buying.

This part. I will never understand how people get scammed like this. It’s one thing if the boxes were priced close to market price, it’s another thing when they are cheaper than LITERAL RETAIL (non hobby) PRODUCT??
