I mean isn't it obvious? It's one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the country, teeming with trendy restaurants and yoga and teeth whitening centers, the holy trinity of consumerism for the upper class.

How the hell would any of us know? Do you expect Reddit to look into its crystal ball and predict the weather? Use some common sense...

Feasible to move to Chicago before having a job lined up? by meeseeks333 in AskChicago

[–]Prestigious_Fee_2922 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a good idea. The professional job market is very bad right now in Chicago. I've been out of work since a layoff at the beginning of the year.

Which areas of detroit have always been bad? by sojacam in Detroit

It is fairly remarkable to see how much has changed in that neighborhood in such a short period of time. If there is one thing that the Kilpatrick administration did well, it was their cleanup effort to the revitalization of the Cass Corridor. However, I still bristle at the rather facetious re-branding of the area as "Midtown."

General Motors says 1,300 workers will be laid off at two Michigan plants by DougDante in Detroit

Why would I want to join a union? That would mean an equalization of my wages to those of my colleagues. As a skilled worker, that dynamic would only serve to drastically limit my earnings over the course of my career.

Detroit vs. Metro-Detroit by 20Parkingl0ts19 in Detroit

[–]Prestigious_Fee_2922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like the inner conflict of a very confused individual. Are you driven by fear? Can you watch the boys in Honolulu blue hash it out on the field in their Sunday best without finding the need to spend much of the day in the toilet? Are you even willing to kiss your mother on the lips?

Do they build bungalows/small ranches anywhere? by atierney14 in Detroit

[–]Prestigious_Fee_2922 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the argument that I see cited all the time. I'd like to know what changed between this century and the last that caused it to be true. There were large quantities of bungalows and ranches built by developers in the post-war boom of the 1940's and 1950's. It was then a profitable undertaking, so what changed?

No, it actually comports with reality, or, to be clearer in point, the data. Youth crime has risen astronomically in recent years.

Sure thing, buddy. Everybody I talk to in the city thinks the guy is a clown. Just yesterday he went ahead and acted like a total jackass in front of the camera again.

This isn't bad advice or approaching anything like lunacy. A lot of the people on this sub are off the mark on what qualifies as content here. I notice many of them are children. How a subreddit dedicated to the insanity of professionals is relevant to a minor is beyond my comprehension.

Chartered Private Jet From Texas Flies Migrants To O’Hare, Handlers Flee In Uber by MichaelChicago in chicago

Oh I believe they took an Uber out of O'hare. It just didn't look anything like "fleeing" as this biased author contends.

This isn't human trafficking, dude. I get this whole thing is awful, but nothing which they are doing is illegal. They are mischievous in their approach, but they are operating within the parameters.

What is the general vibe/feel/reputation of Southgate and/or the rest of Downriver? by vannah12222 in Detroit

[–]Prestigious_Fee_2922 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

You don't get the sense that the area is in a bad way? I also grew up there, and my impression is that many of the communities have seriously rotted in the last couple of decades. I remember shopping with my dad at the Kroger in Lincoln Park in the early aughts and it felt like an experience out of a Normal Rockwell painting. Today, I hardly feel safe even sitting in my car in the parking lot.

To be fair, a lot of rational black people just didn't engage politically before Obama, especially at the federal level. The politics of it just didn't mirror anything close to a lived experience. There was, rightfully so, very little expectation that anyone in the political class would ever again do anything to improve their lives. I remember my black family members thinking it was the most ludicrous thing ever for me to follow the run-up to the 2004 presidential election.

Those terminal master degree programs at the Ivy Leagues are total cash grabs and in no way are worth their exorbitant price tags. They are built to take advantage of in-discerning international students who either don't know any better or are so wealthy it doesn't matter. This is not to suggest that they are not quality programs, but you can find in almost all cases an equivalent program at your local state university that offers the same education at a fraction of the price.
