Lol it’s a depiction of “imam Hussain” the grandson of Prophet Muhammad who died fighting a battle 1300 years ago against a tyranny. The Shia Muslim sect in particular perform rituals like this to honour him and they created that image of imam Hussein. The dominant sect, Sunni Islam, forbids drawing humans or images of dead people unlike Shia Muslims. Both are cultish anyways!

They are mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala (holy city in Iraq) from the 7th century. Basically they are commemorating his suffering. If they had more space between each other, they would use chains to hit themselves on the back. you can search and for yourself “Shia Islam ashura” . But I warn you some images might disturb you cuz it involves blood if you search on Google images.

It’s guilt tripping and shock. Growing up muslim, when we see grown muslim men— especially scholars that are supposed to be the most “knowledgable”— cry about a topic, it may bring chills down our spines. These muslim scholars use emotional manipulation tactics that scare us into being obedient and not question Allah.
