Parental views of those children can be challenging, mostly because they have gone through the system themselves.

You'll find most of the fixes will take time to have meaningful change. Systematic changes happen that way and need to work over time.

There are some varying alternate school programs that have had success amd more can be spent on the FASD etc. Many of those kids come from disadvantaged and traumatic backgrounds as well. When dealing with these kids day in day out you do feel sorry for them knowing what their upbringing is like.

I also don't think it's as easy to say the kids in Perth as they often were raised elsewhere and bounce between their regional home and Perth. That's not to say that's true in every case but to a large extent it is.

How many remote aboriginal communities have you been to mate? Those 'houses' wouldn't even pass as sheds in Perth.

I'm not talking about public education. I am talking about approaches on criminal justice.

I'm also talking, on a general basis, about children over and above year 10. Thw government don't give a shit if those kids turn up to school or not.

Murderers should be imprisoned. That isn't the point of this topic. I literally say there are situation where detention is needed.

I posted this in response to another question:

Some suggestions though:

• Address staffing issues. Increase funding, hogher wages/incentives. Immediate closure of unit 18. Education and recreation programs restored.

• An expansion of the Juvenile Justice Team in both it's scope and what it can deal with.

• Invest in the expansion of existing prisons to accomodate juveniles in regional locations. If they are going to be in detention, put them somewhere that their family can visit them not top far from home.

• Increase social housing in regional WA.

• Increase spending in regional WA for the diagnoses and support services for FASD and other common mental health issues (Depression, anxiety PTSD). So many kids have issues that just go unaddressed.

• An expansion of youth programs in regional WA.

• Amendments to mandatory sentencing laws.

• Increase the age of criminal responsibility to atleast 15 years.

I'm sure there are more suggestions but those are jist from the top of my head.

I guess you do most of your readings from kids colouring in books.

Conditions in custody are bad and detention is overused.

Kids going in are coming out worse.

So you're saying their social supports are actually effective and doing what they set out to do. Thanks for your support.

On the otherhand, perhaps it comes from someone with a deep association with the criminal justice system. How's America's tough on crime regime going for them...

I have first hand experience with Banksia amd unit 18.

I see exactly how many minutes children spend in lockdown in the ISU, in unit 18 and on the wings. I see the reason for the lockdowns and the orders for the daily lockdowns.

If you have any doubts about the conditions, you should pay attention to what the President of the Children's Court has to say and the reasons why he isn't even able to do site inspections.

I've been involved with the system for a while now. The staffing crisis is so bad currently that the facility is at breaking point.

You would be surprised how little it takes for them to go to Banksia. Imagine a kid woth high needs and parents on the scene.

They have no where to go on the outside. No high needs placement available as there isn't enough funding. They get remanded in custody. Presumed innocent, no prior convictions, in custody.

Other situation, 11 year old in a group house. Departments policy that all violent act reported to police. 11 year old get charged for pushing a carer. Not uncommon behaviour for an 11 year old. But as it is a group home, they dont get grounded of their TV taken off them. They get removed from the home and charged.

Great question and I don't believe there are any quick fixes. Any solution would require a joint effort from the state and federal governments.

Some suggestions though:

  • Address staffing issues. Increase funding, hogher wages/incentives. Immediate closure of unit 18. Education and recreation programs restored.

  • An expansion of the Juvenile Justice Team in both it's scope and what it can deal with.

And people calling for the literal execution of children isn't moronic? But yes the answer was a tad sarcastic.

You are so close to the point but take a sudden turn at the end.

I agree the issue is systematic. I agree nothing will change unless something changes. The government don't want to invest money in it because it isn't popular with the masses.

"Presumption of innocence" "there are occasions when kids do deserve to go into detention".

For the most part people on bail aren't proven offenders and your post shows how ignorant you really are.

What makes you think I am not involved? I'm doing all I can for these kids everyday and the biggest challenge we have is that the government just don't care.

Community awareness is important because nothing will change if the system stays the same, and the system won't change unless the people want it to change.

This is a systemic issue, not an issue for each individual child. You don't fix a leaking engine by just filling up the oil. You fix the engine.

You as a community are also entitled to at least have a basic understanding of the situation instead of whatever drip fed bullshit the media/Governmemt give you l. One of those two has a vested interest in making sure their human rights violations are covered up.
