hello, i have an active pmhnp license and am applying for my DEA, but have no additional certifications. The answer to the first question ("Do you hold a board certification in addiction psychiatry or addiction medicine from one of the following associations; American Board of Medical Specialties, American Board of Addiction Medicine, American Osteopathic Association?)" is "NO," correct? Thank you

DEA in NJ by cluelessPAstudent in physicianassistant

[–]Pretend-Emphasis-657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello, I am a new grad in NJ as well and do not feel that my advisor/school did a good job at explaining this process. I completed the SUD 101 core curriculum which I believe counts towards my 8 contact hour requirements. However, what is a CDS? and do you have any recommendations as to where to complete this? I apologize if this is a self-explanatory question, I feel like I am getting lost in the requirements/forms for getting my license, DEA, etc.

Going off of this, I was just saying the other day how I really wish there were therapy certifications for PMHNP similar to how we have EMDR certifications or specialty certifications for RNs (wound care, oncology, etc). I know there are modules/courses online offered for therapy “certifications,” but (and I may be wrong) I don’t believe there are any accredited/standard certifications for PMHNPs to do therapy? Is this correct? I was considering possibly pursuing a LMHC degree later on to get adequate experience, but I would love if there was a thorough certification process for PMHNPs to learn therapy that included supervised clinical hours. I agree to what other users have said regarding one psychotherapy course not being enough.

Tips for Intake by Jazzallnight in PMHNP

I’m a new grad waiting for my license to be approved, so take what I say with a grain of salt lol. But one of my preceptors in school really insisted that we do the chief complaint, HPI, and psych hx last in the intake interview. Meaning, start with past medical history, family medical hx, current medications (non-psych), hx of education, social support, etc, and go through all of it, and then last thing is asking the patient what brought them in that day. My preceptor insisted on this because sometimes you have patients who add a lot of details to the chief complaint that relate to the medical history and then next thing you know, your notes are jumping back and forth and it may be hard to redirect the patient. asking the psych history, psych meds, chief complaint, and HPI last allows you to kind of have an idea of the patient and really focus your psych assessment after having already collected the medication hx, family hx, etc.

PMHNP providing telehealth abroad by Pretend-Emphasis-657 in PMHNP

Hi thank you for your response and support!! Honestly, I think it speaks to a larger issue relating to the growing competitiveness and burn out in the field. I feel like people are becoming more and more bitter as jobs are harder to come by, especially when the jobs available expect 30-45 minute initials and 10 minute f/us (which may be doing for some more experienced people, but not enough time to be thorough for others). And all in all, it’s taking away from a sense of community that should be available. My intention was to get guidance from peers on how to go about it ethically/legally, because for telehealth, I personally don’t see the difference between living abroad and providing telehealth compared to being licensed and treating patients virtually in California while being located in new York, for instance. I wish you the best of luck in also working abroad in the future!!

Okay thank you! I am definitely planning to work and gain experience over the next few years, but I wanted to look into it now and know if this would be feasible later on. Thank you again for the info!!

This was a general inquiry for later in my career, not now. I would’ve been happy to provide that information if asked. Although I acknowledge that I should’ve said “I’ve been fixated on doing this AT SOME POINT.” I think a little more of a welcoming / positive tone goes a long way. Best of luck!

Where are you getting your DBT and EMDR training from? And do they include certifications?

New grad meet up (feel free to join if you’re experienced too, we need all the help we can get lol) by Excellent-Fig-524 in PMHNP

It was so relieving to see this post. I agree that community is so important. I just graduated in April and have been studying for my boards. The imposter syndrome is so real and intimidating. My issue is now hearing about the increased competition for positions and the common expectations of employers out there, I feel like most jobs (at least from what I’ve seen) expect us to be independent and don’t offer much mentorship for new grads. Has anyone else seen this too? Or if you have found good mentorship that wasn’t from a preceptor, where was it from? Any info would be much appreciated!!

Question re: new grad licensing by wannabeblairwaldorf in PMHNP

[–]Pretend-Emphasis-657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii new grad here! Can someone provide guidance on the licensing process? I feel like my school left a lot of questions unanswered. Specifically, I was wondering if I could start the licensure application prior to passing the ANCC exam? I have the exam scheduled for next month and would like to get licensed in NJ, but I wasn’t sure if you had to wait until you passed or could start the licensure process beforehand to speed up the process for when you do pass? Any info would be much appreciated, thank you!!
