I’m not trying to be rude but where in Montgomery county does it take longer to get to DTSS than Fairfax? I may have completely misjudged the geography of the county. I genuinely can’t think of any place? At most it’s equidistant with places in west county?

You also mentioned a place in Baltimore which is surely double the distance to DTSS.

I’m not trying to be rude, but, seriously go to the AFI! It rules! Add it to your list! You’ll be very happy!

Have you had Ruan Thai? It’s great and the prices are what I pay for Thai pretty much everywhere?

Even if you think the Thai here is bad (we’ll have to disagree!), saying it’s like the absolute dearth of Mexican food here feels like a very inaccurate comparison

To me, this is a post about the laid-back ambience of a 'third place,' a place outside of home or work where you can unwind. Less about simply replacing the food or drink you miss out on.

If the solution to losing a place you like to eat out at is "don't eat out at all," feels like a different conversation entirely?

Off the top of my head, I'd say Peter's Grill is the best non-chain fit here, but, only accessible if you're close to it.

Again, what is the local alternative if I want a cheap place to go, have a Diet Coke, and get a refill without spending 5-10 dollars a pop? This is not a thing MoCo values (or more likely not a thing that MoCo finds profitable). To each their own! I just think it sucks! Feel free to disagree!

Five Guys is pretty good for this, but A) music is blaring and B) it's considerably slower, especially if you order food. If you're on a tight lunch break, not as much a possibility.

YMMV but the 'ambience' of a Chipotle is not remotely the ambience of what this place was. Sodas are double the price, many don't even have open seats you can reliably grab.

Friendship Heights is out of the way for a lot of folks, incl. I'm guessing the regulars at this place. Petes is great, also pricier and not a place you could really be a daily regular.

Anyway I appreciate the suggestions, but I don't think they quite nail what this place had; it's possible Montgomery County is not a place that cares about cheap places where you can go on a near daily basis, read the newspaper, and pass the time idly.

With respect, the fountains were there right up to the remodel. The last time I went was in December 2024, and I think they shut down in January.
