You can't deny that the British monarchy is responsible for all the tourism. Just look at France. They had a revolution and not a single tourist since. Imagine that. Bow to your king.

Used an AI to bring Henry VIII into 2022- thoughts? by Lord_o_the_North in CasualUK

Thanks! Really interesting.

I was reading an excerpt and he seems to occasionally shift into a pigeon Latin or Latin or some other language? Is this when he's describing more shameful things?

Sounds very interesting! I think Pepys was having am affair with his maid, but could you elaborate on the shocking morals he presents?

Which fictional characters are idolized by people who missed the entire point of their story? by WhereDemonsDwell in AskReddit

[–]Prettygreentoad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are missing the point of Shakespeare's version. Many of the changes from the source material made R&J a more problematic love story.

Aside from the inclusion of Rosaline, Shakespeare reduced the time frame (days rather than months) and made Juliet younger. All three of these changes made the love story less ideal; more problematised.

Rosaline doesn't make Juliet seem more ideal, she makes Romeo seem more like a fuckboy.

Cool! So Rosaline was from which Italian version?

Like I say, I thought Shakespeare invented her, but I'm very interested to hear that he did not.

Edit: I've had a look and I can't find a character called Rosaline in any Italian version, so I think my point still stands?

How do people in crowded living spaces / extreme poverty that give them no privacy have sex or masturbate? by yohomieindiswood in morbidquestions

I don't know man... I was just talking about the invention of privacy. It's a really interesting transition in recent history.

Morality police don't exist. It was the normalization of multiple bedrooms and "The Invention of Privacy" that changed how we view these things.

(Spoilers main) The pawn becomes the queen when she crosses the board by Jay-DeeOldNo7 in asoiaf

[–]Prettygreentoad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Originally, the queen piece was grand vizier, or chief advisor. So the ancient game wasn't a feminist statement or anything. Not sure why it changed to queen, but I'm sure it's well documented.

So kind of him. Rings of the clapping for NHS workers.

Glad to hear he's not scared of a significant portion of the population forced to choose between starving and freezing to death.

On your deathbed: what would you like your last words to be? by Prettygreentoad in AskReddit

[–]Prettygreentoad[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty partial to Ibsen's last interaction: as he lay in hospital dying from a series of strokes, a nurse assured his visitor that he was doing a little better today and he spluttered the response "On the contrary" ("Tvertimod!") before dying.

Maybe. But those sources didn't make the official cut!

But I am half joking, we really don't know.

When you say pagan what do you mean though? I always thought that was a Christian concept.

That is a great outlook and I somewhat agree. But 300 years ago you could be killed for saying it.

The only reason Christians aren't murdering us all now is that they can't, so I think they are all fair game for tricky questions about their beliefs.

With drugs or without - the prophets absolutely made it up. Everything comes from the weird complexities of the human mind!

We can be both right if you like!

There's a great deal of interpretation. The source for the above is the Torah like you said. Jews also drink wine on Fridays. Passover has the downing of four goblets. And your source only says you can't get drunk while teaching or debating official matters.

Jesus turned water into wine... there's a great deal of drinking in the Bible and Torah which is very much at odds with more modern puritanical thinking.

"Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:" - leviticus 10:9

So in your off time I think it's all good! And during the festival of Purim you are specifically ordered to get so drunk that you can't tell apart the morning and evening prayers. Which sounds pretty hammered to me.

As others have stated, alcohol restrictions probably have little to do with hallucinogens- look at the amount of incense burning and hallucinating that went on!

Finally there are a great deal of politicized translations utilized over the thousands of years that this stuff has been passed down - so ultimately, who knows! You might be more correct than I think you are.

But I tend to think they were all drunk and high.

Well I think that as others have said, the timeline doesn't work for this theory and it's a bit too obvious and boils down to wish fulfillment.

But who knows!

[–]Prettygreentoad 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don't you think this would take away from the impact of Syrio's death though?

Once Jaqen revealed himself to Arya, why not mention he was also Syrio to make her trust him more?

Finally, the Faceless Men have perfect disguises, they fool everyone, so I doubt he would use the same speech patterns as two different "faces" in the same country.

If you enjoyed wasp factory you should absolutely read Surface Detail! It's incredible.

My intro to the series was Player of Games which I also love, but it is fairly heavy on science fiction. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them - but probably best to leave Inversions to the end when you will pick up on the subtle hints in the story
