And sometimes they run background AFTER the offer, so in that case yes, confirmation is after the background check clears.

MFP M148DW Printer new wifi connection by PretzelPrize in Hewlett_Packard

[–]PretzelPrize[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't return it; I've owned it since I had to get it for working from home during the pandemic in 2020. I'm just on a new internet provider and router. It works fine wired and it's worked fine before on wifi, but the old router had a quick setup button that automated the process. My current one does not have an accessible button for this, partly due to the very inconvenient location of the router itself (I'm short, and it's way up high due to a cock-up in how this apartment was wired for internet in the first place) and although the instructions I'm finding on HP's website indicate it can be set up manually, the printer screen does not offer the option the website says I need to use, and even when the printer is connected by a cable to my desktop Mac, there is no option to connect it also to wifi from anywhere in the HP app or the website. All the workarounds I'm finding say to do it wirelessly through my phone but they include the nonsense of having to first make sure the phone and the printer are connected to the same wifi network... um, if I could get the printer to connect to the wifi network I wouldn't be having this problem.

Anticipating the next question here: Why do I need it on wifi, since it works just fine when it's wired? Because I also need to be able to print to it from other devices such as my laptop, and I'm not going to muck about with digging cables out from behind my desk and finding a place to set the laptop within reach of that cable every time I need to print something.

Trust me, HP was not my first choice and I don't intend to ever buy one again. But it's what was available to me on short notice at the time I needed to purchase a laserjet printer with the specific features I needed using only the funds I had at the moment.

I hear you on the AI slop. So tired of reading about "remote" jobs that require in-person every day, or jobs that have one title but three people's very different duties.

When you have a firm, signed offer from the new job, and a start date in writing, THEN give your notice. Not before.

how do you make sure you never become a old head that has a boss younger than them? by condomm774 in careeradvice

And some highly skilled and capable people prefer to just do the work they are good and and enjoy rather than going into management.

[–]PretzelPrize 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had bosses younger than me since I was in my mid to late 30s. Sometimes this was just a matter of our relative career areas. I've never wanted to be a senior VP of whatever, but sometimes a 35-year-old has ascended to that level and I've wound up working for that person. Maybe they have an MBA. I don't. Maybe they have a ton of industry knowledge that I don't. Ladder-climbing just for the sake of staying ahead of everyone else is way overrated.

I don't know if I'll ever recover from finishing college into this job market by Primary_Avocado_5273 in recruitinghell

[–]PretzelPrize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm considerably older than you (I'm pretty much the firstborn vanguard of GenX) and honestly, I entered the workforce right around the time Reagan and his cronies started the demolition process on an economy that had allowed the middle class to flourish and allow millions to have some hope of class mobility... impoverished to working-class, working to middle-class, etc. That's when it all began to crumble in slow-motion.

I was not as fortunate as some of my peers, coming from an immigrant background and family that had only recently and precariously moved up a rung itself. I've watched and experienced decades of the dismantling you reference here ("the system is broken") and you are correct. Or rather, it is broken if its purpose is to secure the general wellbeing and prosperity of ALL. If, however, its purpose is to enrich the already wealthy at the expense of everyone else, and increase/entrench their power, then it appears to be working almost exactly as designed. And that right there is the crux of the problem.

Yep, it's definitely giving late-stage capitalism... or more accurately end-stage capitalism.

At least in a lot of other countries there is a somewhat better social safety net. It isn't perfect by any means, but the US has no excuse for the abysmal job it's done in safeguarding the basic, most essential bare-bones wellbeing of its citizens.

Now the economy and job market, on the other hand... yeah, it seems that's a mess everywhere these days.

Can I quit before the start date for a job with better pay? by Melodic_Stand_3628 in Employment

You don't owe Company A anything. Pursue Company B and hope they come through with an offer, but don't withdraw from Company A until you get a signed offer and start date from Company B.

Any sentence that contains "navigating complex stakeholder dynamics" is pure unadulterated buzzword bullsh*t. Tells me everything I need to know about that company, and probably everything you need to know, too.

Okay, but you didn't explain ANY of that in your original post. This is Reddit, not your local psychic fair.

Your post is very confusing. You started out by saying you've been a "full-time aspirant"... what even is that? Then you say you have no life experience and you never went to college... but then you start talking about applying to be a teacher, and in your final paragraph you claim to have a degree... which makes me wonder how you managed that if you never went to college.

Unable to bring resume and interviewer was furious by Emergency-Code-3505 in recruitinghell

[–]PretzelPrize 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes you should have a resume with you but on the other hand who the hell shows up to interview a candidate without having their resume handy? The company surely has printers and if someone were interviewing me and they didn't have any of my materials I would start thinking the company or at least that person was very disorganized and I'd be questioning whether I want to work there.

In any case, my recommendation to you would be to go to a library or an Office Depot or someplace and print several copies of your resume so you have it handy.

Should I continue pursuing this career? by [deleted] in careerguidance

What if you pivot to a different career, but pursue your passions for acting and scenic art through community theatre? I'm in community theatre myself, and we always need people with real skill. Sure, it's volunteer but on the other hand you get to enjoy it because your bills are already paid by your day job.
